在2017年6月,Apple更新了13寸的MacBookair,他换上了更新更好的Intel Core i5处理器,让性能和电池续航时间提高。

Fan ZIF connector - fixed but won't close

I took my MacBook air (13'' early 2017) apart for cleaning and redoing thermal paste. When reassembling, I dislodged the ZIF connector flap for the fan.

I have just put the flap back on after many hours of not-very-festive tweezering.

However, the flap won't close! If I try to close it, it feels 'stuck'. And the top side starts to edge out of the socket.

Things I have checked:

  • All 6 pins seem to be in the grid inside the ZIF flap. (Could be wrong)
  • It's the right way round.
    • The side with two studs would be down if it was closed (i.e. it's facing away from the fan).
    • The side with the text DDK 4... is on the opposite side
  • The flap still has the tiny 'ears' on - see photo:

Problems I can think of so far:

  • The flap is in the wrong position in the socket (left to right)
  • The flap seems to be open too far (past 90º)

I've attached pictures. (The fan connector is next to the white insulation tape, which is holding the fan cable.)

I really don't want to have to reattach it once more haha... or worse break it. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

There are some small numbers stamped in the connector, these are on the top side when it is closed and readable from the fans side. When it is fully open it sits at 90 degrees. It looks like it is not quite slotted into it's groove hence it is 'wonky'.

Thank you! You were right. I wouldn't have noticed that because the top of the flap looked like it was all the way in.

I kept trying to push/pull the flap in further with tweezers, but no luck. I then tried to close the flap while pushing down and towards the fan. That got it closed!

@jackc76557 God you got it fixed :) I kinda avoid using tweezers for anything, prefer the touch and feel method, works better for me. BTW there is no need to remove the fan to do thermal pasting, unless you wanted to blow out the fan. I blow out fans when they are still connected, easy enough, and saves the potential of the latch flying away.

@livfe Thank you so much :)) Yes I think that's true, I think I couldn't have managed putting it back in without tweezers myself but fingers were better for the last step like you said. Yes I think you're right, next time I'll try keeping the fan connected!
