powers up the freezes

My HP computer fires up you can hear it but the monitor never lights up, neither does the keyboard or optical mouse. Been sitting a very long time on the floor at my work in the breakroom, got it for free when they upgraded all there computers, used to use it but dont know how long its gone without being used.

Check your power supply. Remove the side cover and see what "fires" up. See if the fan on your CPU spins when you turn the computer on.

I would first look into dusting out the computer, this may be overheating, and it is locking up to protect the processor

Opening the case is as easy as removing the two thumb screws and lifting back, and when you have the case off, blow out the parts in the case with a air compressor or canned air, and see if this solves your issue

Next, I'd try reloading the OS, but this will cause you to loose your data if you need to do the destructive recovery, so back it up in case now

Press F8 and select safe mode with networking, log onto your account you use, and put your data on a flash drive, and go over it a second time to be sure

I do not know for sure if the Pavilion 700 is new enough to have this, but my A400Y is, but pressing F10(or whatever it says for system recovery on yours) will let you recover the system, and select non destructive recovery and try this first and see if it helps, otherwise you'll need to do this and do a destructive recovery and try that

If this does not help, run it with one stick at a time, which ever one that makes it stable is good, and the removed stick is bad, but if you have one stick, you know which one is bad without testing, or need to buy RAM to test

If memory does not help, it could be the hard drive, just know these use IDE drives, so finding one may be hard

Also know if you had a recovery partition, you'll loose it and need a XP disk to reload XP after

If this does not help, it's the motherboard, or a failed processor, pick your route at this point and let me know, because this is costly and may not be worth it and the system should be used for parts, or disposed of for it's age

thanks to all of you for your input, i did blow it out and cleaned it, it turned out to be a ram chip not all the way in i guess it got loose while sitting on the floor at work and getting kicked. It is slow at times but ithink that may be too little ram( 504,is what it sayas i have) and its pretty full I am working on cleaning it out of junk programs and stuff, THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!

Where is a cheap place to get computer parts, like didk DVD disk drives, ram chips and the like online?

here is a place to get memory

http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx, I got my A400Y from the curb with 256, added 512MB, only sees 504MB, shared it with the video on mine, i'm fine with 504MB, you only really need memory, the HDD and DVD drives are optional, start with RAM like I did an work your way up as needed

Mine had 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, modem, CD-RW, now it has 512MB, 100GB HDD, modem and wireless cards, DVD burner, CD-RW, and a 2.6GHZ celeron

If you want to know where I got my parts, part systems I'm given I will not fix for whatever reason, usually fried motherboards or processors on the part out ones if i do not have a CPU for it
