Every task running slow

My Imac has been running extremely slow on all tasks, booting up, browsing the web, openinig a folder or file, launching an app.. ect.

Even after ive removed a lot of redundant files, cleaned and scanned the drive for malware, nothing seems to fix it
Sometimes If its being used for a period of time its slow but not too bad. its almost like its warmed up.

But if left for a while and you come to use it it takes a while to get going. sometime you might be waiting over a minute or two just to open a file

Anybody experienced the same thing? Any ideas? Could the hard drive need replacing?

Thanks in advance

Is your system a Fusion Drive?

Have you run the system Diagnostics? Restart the system and press the D key to enter Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac yet us know what it reported.

thanks for the reply

I no idea how to check its a fusion drive system.

Ran Diagnostics and all seems to be OK

I do have a couple of screen shots but it look s like im unable to upload in here

No issues found

Reference code : ADP000

Then it goes on about support.

I also ran first aid on the volume

That operation was successful.

The drive itself is a 1TB with 913gb available.

Is there anything else you can suggest I try?

Thanks

@wayne16803 - I'm leaning on a failed SSD drive. A Fusion Drive is two physical drives a SATA HDD and a second hidden SSD drive which is used as a Cache drive to the HDD. To prove this is the fault you'll need to have an external drive which your system uses as its boot up drive. Here's the hidden SSD iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K Display (2017) Blade SSD Replacement.

Do you have a drive you can setup as a bootable external drive?

@danj

Sorry for the long delay in replying. Ive set up a pen drive to boot from.

Im assuming its just a case of running first aid on the internal drive?

OK ran it on all drives that appeared under internal and all passed apart from the parent (drive at the very top)

'problems where found with the partition map which might prevent booting

counld't mount disk. :(-69842)'

What does this mean and is there anything else I need to run or check?

@wayne16803 - Well that's not good! The SSD is having problems. You should backup your stuff ASAP as you need to reformat the drive. Hopefully that fixes things.
