My Pismo can't find the hard drive

My old HD (60 GB)has been dying for weeks, up to the point where my Pismo couldn't find it anymore. I bought a new one (160 GB) intending to partition it. But still my Pismo can't find no other drive than the OSX Install Disk, not in Utility Disk nor in trying to change the Startup Disk.

What could be the problem here, and, even more interesting, how could it be saved.

(Somebody told me thar the nwe HD is too big for a Pismo to recognize, but I think it should be able to find it, so I can partition it down to manageable size)

The Pismo will only see about 128 GIGs of the hard drive. Have you installed the drive in the Pismo or do you have it in an external enclsure? How did you set the jumpers. What drive did you install? Would you check the date and time without being connected to the internet and see if they are correct?

Well there's actually at least one thread on here I've seen where someone did this, partitioned a 160 into 80 and 80 I think to get it to be recognized.

I'll answer your questions as far as I can. I installed the drive (which is a Western Union ATA HD) in the Pismo. I don't know what jumprs are. I cannot check time and date because they are not in sight when I try to boot from the Install Disk - which is all I can do ot get her going at all...

Right next to where the ribbon IDE cable plugs into the hard drive you will see a set of pins usually eight. These pins sometimes have a plastic jumper on them. The jumper tells the drive if it is a master or slave, etc. The drive should be set to master which is usually no jumpers at all. Type in the full name for your drive in Google and add jumpers to locate your settings if this is still in question. When you asked "how could it be saved", were you referring to you old drive and data or the new drive? Also do you have an external hard drive enclosure?

I'm sorry, it's late night here on the old continent, which doesn't do much good for my english. Of course, my HD is a Western Digital, and where i asked to 'save' my problems, I meant them to be solved. Maybe I'd better do some sleepin first, before I get to work on rour suggestions. Thanx for now, and good night.

What you'll need to do is partition the drive, split it into a 120GB and 40GB drives. This way your pismo can recognize a drive.

I have a pismo and did exactly the same as what you are doing at the moment. Try to split the partition in another computer, i mean try to pull out the HD, and insert it in another computer capable of reading more than 128GB hardisk and do the partition.

Another way to do it if you don't have another spare computer, use some kind of connector, which connects your HD in a firewire cable. Then try to split at least to 2 partitions. For myself, i think i partition 1 in 110GB and the other around 40 something GB.

For more you can check it at PowerBook Pismo G3 No answer after replacing HDD

Good luck
