Touch Bar black but works + goes into sleep mode only after opening

Hey everyone,

New here and still newish repair guy. This is my 3rd MacBook Pro a2338 repair and this time the issue is strange. The person told me that the Mac is unresponsive and the Touch Bar blacks out + the keyboard doesn't light up. After performing a clean install through DFU (wiping, reinstalling the file system, then loading newest copy of Sequoia), the backlight issue disappeared, but the Touch Bar issue persisted.

When starting up the Mac, the Touch Bar flashes from time to time. After entering the main menu the Touch Bar stays black but responds to touch. In addition to that the computer has problems entering sleep mode when closing lid or even when clicking on the sleep function in the main menu. I'll be trying another DFU full reinstall before opening up the machine. Heard somewhere that those issues might be because of a defective trackpad. Trackpad seems to work and react fine though.

Any ideas what might cause those issues?

What about the closing lid and impossible sleep problem? Also triggered by the fault with the Touch Bar? Any voltages around the connectors that need to be there?

@invi72800 - There is no direct link between the two, but the Hall sensor used to sense the close/open state of the display also effects the TouchBar. But if the screen is reacting correctly the Hall sensor and its logic is working.


The so called impossible sleep issue is a failed Hall sensor which in this model is located on the logic board. Unlike the older 4 port models which had two sensors this model only has one. Lastly, the newer M series use an angle sensor version with a magnet attached to the hinge.

I would start off doing a deep inspection around the Touch Bar connections to the logic board do you see and liquids or physical damage?

Next I would run the Apple diagnostics to see if anything pops (it might not here) Apple Silicon Mac: Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair. And here’s the Apple repair manual MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) Repair Manual

Sadly Apple doesn’t offer a replacement TouchBar which I’m suspecting got damaged either the driver logic or the panel itself self.

Thanks for the fast reply! I inspected the Touch Bar connections under the microscope but didn't find any obvious problems. Cleaned it up a bit and booted the system. Sadly no changes yet.

Apple diagnostics doesn't see anything wrong.

After around 30 min I get a panic log with a restart.

@invi72800 - You can find the TouchBar unit online, but make sure you get the correct version as Apple made a few different versions. Otherwise the full upper case will be needed which is quite expensive.

@danj considering just ordering the touch-bar cable instead of the full Touch Bar, would safe me around 60€. But I also saw that someone had a similar issue and solved it by reheating the cpu (was just only one YT-comment though). Couldn't it be some chip one the motherboard which is responsible for the Touch Bar failing? Which ones do I have to check then?

@invi72800 - First off, this is a SoC M chip based system it’s not an Intel CPU model. I’m not sure what the YT guy was doing as that doesn’t make any sense!


There are two chips involved here, the first is the touch sensor decode which is the one on the TouchBar it’s self. The second is the display driver a modified A series chip from the iPhone. That is part of the cable unit tucked in the corner of the case. The TouchBar display is a custom glass OLED unit. Sadly, the case is not strong enough to not flex when the display surface is hit with a heavy object which cracks the panel. Which is what I’ve mostly seen. But, I guess it’s worth the gamble the driver logic is messed up.
