Why is my left earbud not picked up , it doesn't read on the phone.

One night I was using only the left earbud, and I slept without putting it back into the case. The next morning it was no longer working, I tried charging thinking it was low on battery but nothing till today. I use only the right hand side earbud. What could be the course and how do I make it work again?
