Surface Pro 5 3rd touch failure. Screen replacement didn't fix the los

Hello everyone!

I am so lost and really don't know what to do anymore. My customers Surface Pro 5 has lost it's touch function after a windows 10 update. Also there is no touch input within the UEFI bios.

Since I am a technician, I installed a known good tester display with new cables and a working touch board. Nothing.

Got a new display from AliExpress with a new touch controller, it worked until the first reboot. Aaaaand it's gone.

I did check the AliExpress display on a tester surface pro 5 and it worked prior to installing it on my customers device.

After I installed it on my customers SP5 it no longer worked.

I feel like this surface pro 5 has a habit of frying display touch controllers. Checked the board for any heat spots or water damage but there is nothing.

All the voltages are fine and no capacitors or resistors are bad.

So what the hell is going on here? Do you guys have any idea what the issue could be?

Reinstalled everything as well btw and tried win 11 with no luck.

Had a similar issue with my personal Surface Pro 5 and had to replace the motherboard.

This is how ever a 1TB i7 board and it would a shame to trash it.

Best regards

This is not just you. I refurbish these things and 2 on the shelf and one sold to a customer have the same issue. Customer's Surface did Windows Update and touch stopped working. Was going to exchange for another but decided to see what happens and connected to WiFi let Windows Update run and upon reboot no more touch or pen functionality. So tried another Surface all Surface Pro 5 i7 512GB's. Same issue on the third Surface. What ever Firmware update they have rolled out is killing touch. Tried fresh install of Windows 11 which had additional Firmware updates but still no touch. Touch screens gone bad controller? Nope took a screen off and put it on another Surface and it works fine. Tried swapping controller boards and works on the other Surface without the update. Guess Microsoft is killing off old devices now.

This is so strange because it only happens on the Surface Pro 5. I have almost every generation of Surface Pro tablets for sale, none have this behavior.

I will move aways from these things in the future.

But what I have also seen as a running joke with all Surface models is the LCD quality in general on Microsofts side. White spots in the center of the screen right above the taskbar, backlight being unevenly spread and yellowing on the edges of the display.

The entire Surface line is just a dumpster fire really.

Microsoft is also taking the !#^& at us with their replacement part prices. 369$ for a SP9 battery wth.

Hi @sanchezbarrio

Don't know the answer but here's the schematic that may help.

Perhaps checking all the components in the touchscreen power supply and control circuits are OK may help to prove whether the problem is hardware or software related.

Here's are just some examples of what I found

i) +1P8V_TS (from PU6205 & PR6209) see p.2

+1P8V_TS has a few references e.g. Touch Jtag P3001 pin 10 (p.30), Q3004 (& 3001) to TS_IRQ# (p.30) via R1035 to M9 pin of U1001D (p.10)

ii) U6407 & R6417 +5V (p.7)

Unfortunately I cannot find a free download for the boardview file for the motherboard which would help to identify the motherboard location of the components shown in the schematic, but here's a link where you can get it but you have to register with the site and I didn't want to do this.

Hopefully this may be of some help.

Hi Jayeff! Thank you so much I will look right into it!

The stakes are high since these 1TB models are so rare.

Best regards

The fact that this has happened to multiple owners of the Pro 5 I do not believe this is a hardware issue. There are multiple reports of this happening after the recent firmware update the past couple of months. I have a stack of the Pro 5's and all lost touch after the firmware update. Every one was working fine until Microsoft did an automatic update. Not a hardware issue. Also find it funny that the Jan 13th update apparently caused this and they discontinued support for the Pro 5 on Jan 15th. Take that as you will.
