Spilled vodka on my new unibody MacBook Pro 15'' (late 2011)

A week ago I bought a new Macbook pro 15'' unibody late 2011 model and two days ago I spilled 20 ml of pure vodka on the eject key of the keyboard. My first instinct was of course to panic and I didn't turn it off till about 5 minutes later. And I know this is bad, but I turned it on almost immediately again. While I was logging on I realized that my o and k keys had stopped working. So I turned it off. The next thing I did was to disassemble it. I noticed that my battery was wet and certain other parts were too. So I got a cotton cloth and wiped it gently until it was dry. My next move was to take the hard drive out and even though I had dried my battery, I did not have a screwdriver with which to unscrew it and take it out. So I did what I could. I left it in there. I then proceeded to cover my hard drive in rice and I also left my laptop flipped and on top of rice. Now, it is 2 days later and after reassembling my pro, it won't turn on. But I can see it charging. Any suggestions as to what I can do? Or what might be wrong with it?

What proof and/or percent of alcohol was the vodka? What are the last 3 characters of your serial number, please?

In three out of four cases of spills on these machines, replacing the upper case solves the problem. Note the plastic covering on the bottom of the keyboard, this protects the logic board pretty well. If you saw liquid actually on the logic board you may have greater problems. If it is completely dried out you can try starting it up. If the only problem is with the keys you may be in luck and a top case replacement may be all that is required. If not I would contact my insurance agent and see if you are covered.

These MacPros are made in China and don't like Russian vodka. You would have been ok if you spilled rice wine on it.

There are little white dots strategically placed around the keyboard, RAM ports, and logic board area. If the white dots turn pink that means they have triggered and Apple will know you liquid damaged the unit. If you can remove all signs of liquid damage, then just take it into the Apple store and have them mess with it under warranty. Worst they can say is no.

There are companies on e-bay ranging from $150-$400 that will repair Russian Vodka spills on MacPros. Purchasing a new or working used logic board is currently cost prohibitive, so best bet is to get the logic board repaired.

Fairly nice answer. However, the problem can be with the upper case and not the logic board and or a contaminated connection. We need to run them through properly cleaning up after liquid damage and we will need to have them jump start the machine to rule out the upper case. First we need to determine the exact motherboard.

Thanks ABCellars. I forgot to mention that they need a new keyboard + getting the logic board fixed. The keyboard can be removed from the top case and replaced with a new one or working used one, so don't order a top case/keyboard combo, unless your top case is severely dented or you don't feel like removing all those tiny keyboard screws behind the black plastic tape. I stand behind my previous post- They will def need the logic board repair if they had the MacPro powered on for 5 mins before shutting off and didn't unplug the battery from the logic board. The electricity from the battery + the AC power cord + vodka will have ruined/corroded components on the logic board.

Would you replace this logic board on your laptop prior to attempting to properly clean the residue off of it and shorting the jumpers/3G_Hot rail to power it on first??? If so please sell me your motherboard.

You said "properly clean" which means this person has to have the right chemicals and knowledge of where to clean to do a decent job and why on earth would you want to jump the power and further damage components? Best send the logic board in for the pros with the right equipment and knowledge for the repair work. That way you get a warranty with the repair. No way-you can't have my motherboard.

I agree, if component level troubleshooting and/or work is in order that it is best to send it to a professional. That being said, many times in situations like the one here there is not component damage. So the place to start is by cleaning up any residue and/or contaminates on the board. Click here for iFixit's guide on cleaning up after liquid damage to a motherboard. It very well be the only things damaged are in the upper case and that is the only cause of it not powering up. After the board has been cleaned the easiest way to determine that is to attempt to power on the laptop with all cables from the motherboard to the upper case unhooked. If there are components damaged on the motherboard preventing it from powering on, then they are already damaged - so I am confused where you come up with further damage?
