Vintage Handmixer Cracks&Pops

Cheers all !

This is a VINTAGE CLASSIC 1960S HANDMIXER ABC-MIX

Anyone smart & witty with vintage out there? : )

So the unit has been faultless for years but recently some irritating "pops and cracks" have been heard using it, during longer sessions when the unit warms up sufficiently - apparently. Before a tiny crack sound was heard, but nothing else and the mixer worked as usual. Yesterday a louder pop was heard and I stopped surprised, there was smoke coming out - but ! the unit works still. What the heck is happening here??!?

Thnx any tips & advice appreciated !

@henriko Can you take the unit apart again and upload new pictures of the insides? I'm suspecting the capacitor, but not completely positive. 在已经存在的问题里加入图片

Of course. Will do. Opened it and checked it anyway several times for security reasons (especially that the AC main cords are protected and not damaged by heat), some own mods also made (speed connector, soldered one wire that was so close to break free from its solder) but it's otherwise original

Hi @henriko

You may have to contrive any mechanical parts that are broken/faulty etc, if you want to fix it.

Here's the mixer I think. If I've got the correct one then the company that made it no longer exists. Probably because they made products that lasted for 50+ years ;-)

Do you have a DMM (digital multimeter)?

完成的

@henriko Yeah, that capacitor looks like it's shot. What country are you from (so I can find the right distributor for you)?

@andrewsawesome Yesss thought so too, it was this one that cracked and popped. I'm in Finland. Andrew, how can I promote you? And as this is a paper wax capacitor, it doesn't blow the mixer apart does it? I remember you wrote it won't give any big bangs or fires right.

I think now, studying it in detail, that the capacitor was touching the metal casing of the motor, that is extremely hot (burns even through the plastic), so I now corrected its position, so that it does not touch the metal parts at all.

@henriko You can get a new capacitor for the mixer at https://fi.farnell.com/kemet/f863bc104k3... . I would order 10 (you cannot order any less). They charge €15 for delivery.

These capacitors filter the electrical noise produced by the mixer so that the power in your house is not noisy while this is in use. The capacitor I linked is rated to handle temperatures up to 125°C, so it shouldn't fail due to heat, and if it fails, it fails safely. When soldering the new capacitor in, make sure to cover the capacitor legs with heat shrink or similar so they don't short out on the metal parts of the mixer.

I don't think there's a problem with the motor, but it's hard to know unless we replace this capacitor.

Thanks Andrew ! I will save your info, will do further tests and yesterday I carefully analyzed the broadband suppress filter, there was a clear mark on the inner side of the plastic casing, where it had touched during the pop: a melted little hole in the plastic, and I also realised its position had moved so, that it touched the burning hot metal case of the motor which I'm sure contributed to it's overheating. As we know it popped well once, and you can see there is 1mm or less holes on both (?) edges of that capacitor. However, during my thorough test yesterday, it worked without any problems, even during a sufficient heat up - I want evidence. So it really seems, the popping was the result of the filter touching the metal case, so I now confirm and secure its position so, that it does not touch the metal parts anymore, and, also thinking of a plastic extra shielding for the filter just in case. I'm very grateful for your help and will have this as ref. Henry

Are you technical expert? I've tried to figure out the schem. Most important is for me to know the field windings or similiar, that carries the (resistance material) current for the 1,2,3 speeds will not break with time and cause any possible fires. So the question there remains: do they break with time (with temperature stress/heat up and cool down). I cannot find any (yes believe me) reference on the net, not even schematics.

Seems there is only one additional very small capacitor (pic 8-9) that we do not know of yet. Maybe a paper wax too.

Correct (?):

AC current (220V in my country) is fed to the broadband suppression filter, from where it goes out to the resistance field windings (looking like worms) and ending up to the speed selector board where speed is selected (3+none). From there it is fed to the motor (pic 6, rear, where the coils are, one cord soldered on both sides) and of course from here way back to the suppression filter out as AC mains -. Perhaps I've figured it out roughly? : )

Regarding the new capacitor for the mixer (at https://fi.farnell.com/kemet/f863bc104k3...) I could ask the correct way to connect the wires. As we know there are 2 cords going in to the filter from both sides. Isn't this correct: connect the filter's both lower cords together, and connect the filter's both upper cords together via capacitor?

Would be very grateful to know what the small capacitor (see last picture, white circle around it) is if I understand it correctly it is not paper wax and may be the motor starting capacitor which may end its lifespan with a big bang as I've read - that I do NOT wish to happen, so please know any knowledge regarding this highly, tremendously appreciated !!!

@henriko It looks more like a thermal fuse to me, but I would recommend checking it with a multimeter to be sure.

Really difficult to give an answer. The gears? The motor? Any electronic parts? I personally would now give it a prominent place in my kitchen as exhibition object, for my daily work I would buy a new one.

Thanks, sure, it is vintage anyway, but I use it as YT channel super star, so I need to fix it ; )
