Why won't the laser move back to the center of the disc?

I have two X360s that I'm trying to repair. The first one I fixed by replacing the worm drive motor, then I got this other one I'm trying to fix. Then the first one I repaired came back with the same problem again about a week later.

Both experienced the same problem of moving the laser beyond the rim of the disc (after several attempts to open and close the disc tray when the systems said "open tray" or loaded the disc incorrectly), and not returning to the spindle. I, of course, had the shell of the drive open so I could see the position of the laser.

Right now I'm trying to fix the second one I got. I bought a "new" worm drive motor this time, but that isn't working, either that or something else is stopping the laser from returning to the spindle.

I'm going to try and get some synthetic grease to lube the gears a bit better than WD-40 does, and I may try swapping some other parts, but I really could use some more pointed direction.

Hi there.

First thing i'd say is a big noooo to WD-40 :( it's not the right kind of lubricant for a drive like this. The drive needs to have 90% precision at least to be able to work, and WD-40 evaporates fast leaving a coating but not a lubricating one.

On the drives I fix, i just use a small bit of standard vaseline gell on the shafts, just enough to be dragged along , but never too much so it cannot touch any other parts around (get that stuff on a DVD and it takes ages to get it back off lol).

The laser should not be capable of going past the end of a disc because of the length of possible travel on its shafts, but if it insist on just shooting off to the far edge, it may need to have the spindle reset again in the right place - the logic board may be assuming the outer edge is not where it really is.

I don't have a 360 here to check it on, but I assume from others that you should detach the cable from the motor, turn the unit on so it thinks it's taken the head to the correct place, turn off, then refit the head all the way to the centre before refitting the cables (this method works on some older drives i've refurbished and was essential).

Also, use a cleaning disc several times in the drive, or clean the lens cover manually if you're ok with doing that kind of work. One i fixed last month would go nuts, smacking the laser to one edge just because of a thin layer of dust over the lens.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for the tip. I just bought some White Lithium grease, so I'm going to try a little bit of that. Hopefully that will be all I need. As for cleaning the laser, I typically use cotton swabs and 91% rubbing alcohol when I have the drives open.

Yup, that was the problem. Completely coated the guide shafts and worm drive gear with my white lithium, now the drive works perfectly.

This is a servo track issue, the laser cannot track the data groove, you probably need to replace the laser or the drive controller board.

If you replace the board, also remember to reflash the drive or the console will reject the new board.

You need to adjust the variable resistor for the laser power.

I only tweaked mine a TINY bit. You don't want to send too much current to the laser. Just tweak a tiny bit, test, repeat if necessary.

Here's a nice video:

Has anyone noticed the black gunk (assuming it's dried motor oil/lubricant) worm drive gear? I've seen a couple with this issue, although not a deal breaker I'm thinking it will extend the life and possibly quiet it (a little). I suppose I could get some real lubricant, though I was thinking motor oil from the garage. Would that work?

Update

Also, how do you guys clean the shafts? Rubbing alcohol or just wipe them down?
