Is it possible to recover data from an M2 MacBook Pro that won't boot?

A relative spilled coffee on his M2 MacBook Pro a few weeks back. He cleaned it up and thought there were no issues, but not the machine is completely dead and won't power up at all.

It's in warranty, but since it was caused by the spill, Apple want £1,000 to repair it (it's not yet clear to me exactly what the repair is yet, or whether it would preserve data, but I'm trying to find out).

Is there any way to get the data off the drive without the repair if the device can't be powered up at all? (I haven't verified yet, but from the description I don't think it'll be possible to get into Mac Sharing mode to use it like a disk).

Sorry, Apple won’t recover the data. All they will do is replace the logic board and the TouchID button which is mated to the logic board.

Even still an independent repair shop with deep micro electronics skills might be able to get the system running long enough to backup the drive to an external drive to then carry over to the new logic board.

Are you sure the system hasn’t been backed up either via a local backup drive or via iCloud?

Thanks for the info - this is what I suspected :(

I've spoken to him and got some more info - no recent backups, but the machine does turn on - but you can't see anything but "some colours" on the screen. I'm hopeful this means we can get into "Mac Sharing" mode - however all the instructions I can find seem to suggest you need to be able to click things on the screen - I don't suppose you know if we can trigger this without a screen?

I did some searching and found a suggestion that connecting an external USB-C display and closing the laptop might cause the recovery stuff to show up there, so I'll give that a go when I get hold of it.

@dantup - You’re on the right track! Using an external display with the lid closed and using USB keyboard & mouse/trackpad as you can’t setup Bluetooth at this point.

Thanks - we have now recovered the data. Although it took us over a day to realise that closing the laptop only went into sleep mode because it wasn't plugged into the wall, so it initially took us much longer than it should have (we could only get Finder to open on the external display, everything else was on the broken display) 🤦‍♂️. Once it was plugged in and closed, things were much easier 😄

We didn't need to use recovery mode as it turned out the machine was mostly functional (besides the screen). I'll leave it to him to decide what to do with the hardware (I suspect it'll be paying Apple to repair, although I think £1,000 sounds very steep!).

@dantup - Sorry, I should have told you that. In any case can you score and accept the answer as it’s in your friends hands moving forward.

im in northern ireland, if you want to send it over i could have a look, it wouldnt be anywhere near £1000 either. apple would probably just replace the board as they arent to bothered about people keeping their data.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like it's slightly more functional than I thought (it powers up, but the screen is not working). I'm going to meet up with him on Friday to see if we can get into recovery mode.

I do believe that the reason for the high cost is because the model is still in production and the board or screen needs to be ordered from production stock and not repair stock. After a year or so then the model is replaced with a new one all the boards and other parts come from a repair stock.
