My laptop beeps on start up then turns off.

My laptop beeps when I start it up then shuts off. I tried restarting it by taking out the batteries. I also tried removing and putting back the RAM and nothing seemed to work.

I connected it to the charger and it turns on automatically and beeps twice and shuts off on start up. It does not make any start up noises like the fan or anything of that nature.

Please help.

Hi @sandia36641

When you said "...tried restarting it by taking out the batteries.", did you mean the coin cell RTC (aka cmos) battery as well?

If not try a full power refresh and check if that resolves the problem.

a). Disconnect the charger from the laptop if connected.

b). Remove the main battery from the laptop.

c). Disconnect the RTC battery from the motherboard.

Here’s the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop. Go to p.68 amd p.74 to view the procedure to remove main battery and the RTC battery.

When the RTC battery is removed measure its voltage. If it is <2.6V DC replace it. The part number is 04W1642. If you search online using the part number only, you will find suppliers of the part.

d). Press and hold the laptop's Power button for a full 30 seconds and then release it.

e) Reconnect the RTC battery (or its replacement).

f). Reverse the above steps to re-assemble the laptop.

g.) When the laptop is completely re-assembled, connect the charger and try to turn on the laptop.

If it starts OK there may be a message about the date and time being incorrect. This is normal as the BIOS has been completely reset back to its default settings. Once the date and time have been adjusted the message won’t appear the next time that the laptop is started.

If you had previously changed any user defined settings in BIOS to suit whatever specific hardware configuration that you had for the laptop, then these will have to be set again.

Hi Sandia,

You say two beeps, is that correct? Your laptop may have a memory problem. You have two RAM modules.

First download the Service manual:

Go to page 73 of the manual and open the cover for the RAM module.

Go to page 80 for removing the keyboard to get to the 2nd RAM module.

Download Service Manual:

Also this video may help as there are two RAM modules:

RAM under cover and under keyboard

Remember to first take the battery out and dicharge any power by pressing the power button.

Release the modules, take them out and reseat it. Sometimes this does the trick.

Does it boot now? No?

Now try with just one module and then the other, as just one module is probably defective.

Replace the one that doesn't work.

Remember to take your time - don't rush. Good luck.

Hi @aactech,

The hmm linked above doesn't mention a 2 beep error code (see p.44) and the OP stated that they "...tried removing and putting back the RAM and nothing seemed to work.", although this doesn't mean that they tried one at a time as you suggested or even proved if a slot was faulty.

Time will tell whether either of our answers solved the problem

Cheers

Hi @jayeff,

I got the 2 beeps from a Lenovo community forum???

Yes saw page 44.

Odd how the RAM is in two separate places.

Cheers
