The screen on MacBook is cracked and freezes before I can sign in. If I connect an external monitor, should I be able to then enter my password?

You need an external keyboard and mouse as the display lid needs to be down for the external to become the primary.
If you get the TouchID keyboard you then don’t need to access the systems sensor.
In any case you don’t want to use or move the system as that could cause more problems!
