Retina mid 2012 started randomly restarting

So my computer restarts randomly. When I login right after the restart I DON'T get any message (I'm thinking about the usual "your computer had to restart because of a problem" message).

My computer is a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, for RAM it has 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, and for GPU an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB and Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB. MacOS version is Catalina 10.15.17

I haven't tried anything besides resetting NVRAM and SMC. Is there any ideas on what should I try next?

When booting in Safe Mode i could work for about 6 days before it randomly restarted. This happened when I set it to sleep and when I came back a few hours later it had restarted itself.

A few things I didn't mention before:

1. I have been using the computer with the MagSafe charger connected at all times for years (probably 3-4 years) because if I don't it will only last for about 15-20 min with a full charge. For as long as I remember the battery info window from the menu bar has stated "service recommended" (also attached screenshot here).

2. I've noticed the screen flickers noticeably for a while and gradually stabilizes. This started probably a year ago.

3. The random restarts started I think around two weeks ago. I never suspected something to do with battery since I assumed my battery has been in bad conditions for years now.

Update (07/04/23)

@danj so here's a screenshot (take right now July 4th, 2023) from coconut battery. The new battery was installed on April 28th, 2023

Also on May 26th, 2023 they replaced the thermal paste and cleaned the hardware (for dust), unfortunately I feel like after such intervention the laptop started restarting even more frequently :(

Hi, could you try following this guide to run Apple Diagnostics. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731

Do you get any reference codes?

@erik_l thanks Erik. I tried that but apparently apple diagnostics is not available for my model any more. At least from apple servers apparently If I visit a store there might have those legacy Apple Hardware Test available there.

I was trying to avoid going to Apple since it’s far from where I live but I might have to do it!

Give this a try, disconnect the battery referencing this guide to Step4 2012年中期视网膜屏Macbook Pro 15''电池替换教程. Then press and hold the power button for a good 15secs to fully discharge the logic board. Now plug-in the MagSafe charger, leaving the battery disconnected did it start up and stay running?

Well you’ve been on borrowed time for awhile! Batteries only last for about 4 years unless you are really good in managing the discharge and charging of the battery. Neither extreme is good for a battery powered system as in this case your MacBook Pro.

So let’s just look at the cycle count of 1,240 alone your battery is only expected to last for a thousand cycles so you are over that count! And the battery is now nudging eight years!

So let’s look at this still in another way! Your system is likely running hot! You’ll note the charger will be warm and the MagSafe connector will be warm as well as the system is fighting it’s self! Trying to charge a battery which is shedding off the power as heat instead of storing the power. This can become dangerous! As the heat within the battery builds up gas which at some point will cause the battery to expand beyond the cases ability to hold it and then it can erupt in flames.

As to your systems inability to be stable, this gets into the systems running logic needing power the battery and charger are unable to supply as the chargers power is being siphoned away to charge the battery not run the system. This is most obvious when the running processes require more power.

So the bottom line here as you’ve already realized is replacing the battery! MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2012-Early 2013) Battery

@danj thanks Dan. So I removed the magsafe charger, re connected the battery, plugged in magsafe and as soon as I did that it turned on (without pushing the power button)

@danj Oh man had no idea. Maybe I've been stressing the system for too long. At least the battery doesn't seem swollen at plain sight. Also the MagSafe connector doesn't seem very warm. Makes sense that is the battery though because usually the first "random" restart of the day is the one that takes longer and then they start happening one closer to each other. Seems obvious that the first one takes the longest because the battery has been charging (as much as that is possible) throughout the night because I leave the laptop connected in the night.

I'll change the battery hopefully this warrior can last a few more years. Thanks Dan!
