'X' Through Battery Icon in Menu Bar; Battery Not Recognised

Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook Air Retina 2018 and I have an issue with the battery.

The issue is that there is a cross through the battery icon in the menu bar, and CoconutBattery seems to be unable to find any battery whatsoever

I’m trying to figure out what is causing the issue. I have tried all the methods I could find online: like reseating the battery connector, SMC reset and leaving the charger plugged in for a while, but I have had no luck. I might try PRAM/NVRAM reset and also try the SMC reset again.

The weird thing is that I can see how many charge cycles: 224, and I can unplug the MacBook and it seems to hold a charge for a short while before shutting off if it has been plugged into a charger for a little while.

If I open CoconutBattery, it shows that the battery's charge is unknown and the design capacity is unknown, alongside all other information about the battery other than the charge cycle count, manufacture date, and the battery temperature (well I think it is correct – I didn’t check anything to confirm but it seemed reasonable and realistic). At one point, it did seem to pick something up, where it said that it was fully charged, but the design capacity was 0.4%. The menu bar in macOS also said it was 100% charged.

After it did this, it went back to how it was before. A few minutes later, it did it again, but this time, the macOS menu bar didn't say anything. After this it ran out of charge. I plugged the charger back in, shut it down, and then left it to charge for a while. I haven't touched it since, but that wasn't very long ago. I am planning on leaving it on charge all night to see if maybe the battery is just extremely drained from sitting around untouched for a while, but if that doesn't work, what would you consider to be the issue and what would you do? (I can replace the battery myself. I’m just trying to figure out whether that is the best next move.)

Thanks, Philip.

P.S. The battery is genuine Apple - it is the original! Below is what CoconutBattery shows when the battery isn't being registered properly. ("Charging with 0 Watts" is showing because the charger was not plugged in - when the charger is plugged in, that shows what it should.)

Sadly, the batteries micro-controller logic has a problem!

You need a new battery. Now before you breakout the tools you might want to visit an Apple Store as this battery should be covered under warranty!

Your systems age and the cycle count which is on the low side. This should be covered as a warranty exception.

Make sure you have a copy of this in your hand Determine battery cycle count for Mac laptops

As you can see this battery should have lasted longer. Make sure you press that point. They may try to argue the age being four years. While that could be argued, the fact the micro-controller failed makes that a mute point!

FYI - Apple raised there battery prices, so the iFixit battery would be the cheaper option if they are unwilling to budge.

Good Luck! Let us know how it goes.

That battery is knackered. I'm surprised it's lasted this long. Made in 2018 it's done well to be honest. Be careful, loads of people have had issues with ifixit batteries. I'd hunt around or even find a local computer shop to do it.

@strongbow - Let’s not be so quick to spread misinformation!

@danj Not 'misinformation' I've seen all the questions regarding issues with ifixit batteries and I'm not going to recommend them because this is a ifixit page. I'd rather someone fix their device, not come back a week or two saying I fitted a new battery.........

I for one would never buy one, thats my choice. Tools yes, I have two sets but never ever batteries. That's my opinion and it'll never ever change.

@strongbow - if you spent the time looking you would see there is also a healthy number of ‘other’ battery’s people have struggled with here. I will say the lack of quality chips has increased so all the battery makers have been stung the last few years, even Apple! Which is the case here.

So don’t be so quick, I’ve spoken to the iFixit crew a few times and I can tell you their failure rate is about the industry standard. Now consider where you buy the battery do they stand behind it or not? While it’s a pain to swap out the glued in batts, at least iFixit backs their product.

@danj suppliers i use stand behind all their products and replace faulty items no questions asked. I still wouldn't buy one.
