Random no VGA output bios bleep, with no problem displaying image

PC parts:

  • Motherboard: ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING (newest 5003 bios) edit: 4901, which was removed after few days (28.01 and 5003 replaced it on 04.02)
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  • GPU: Radeon 6950XT Sapphire Nitro+ (connected with 8pin and 8pin + 6pin connectors, using 3 cables could possibly be a fix?)
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 16GB DDR4 (CMR16GX4M2C3000C15)
  • PSU: ThermalTake 650W gold
  • NVME drives: Corsair MP 500 and Samsung 970 evo (there's some exchanges like disabling pcie-1 16x for sata 5/6 and other nvme slots shortens one rail)

Problem:

On boot up i get 1 long 3 short beep bios error (no VGA signal), this only happens after pc has been turned off for longer period of time (~6 hours), if i reset pc immediately it won't happen (cooling off or transistors discharging?)

I do get normal display, only things that do happen are that AMD software gets error that something happened on boot at reseted wattman settings (undervolt from 1200mv to 1120mv, lowest until instant crash was 1020mv, everything above 1100mv seems stable) and i have permanent white LED on MB until pc reset

So i recently updated my ryzen 3600 (non-x) and rx 590 to specs written above and i had no problems at this point, around week or 2 later i did change old fans to get better ventilation and i did change 3 thermaltake generic case fans to arctis ones and CPU cooler (silentiumpc fera 3) fan to beQuiet fan, after that i started getting those no VGA output bios errors

what i tried:

  1. changing pcie 16x slot
  2. changing DP cable from 2.0 to 1.2
  3. changing DP on back of the card
  4. updating chipset (i mean, who knows at this point...)
  5. changing case fans from fan headers to hub (lowering power strain on MB)
  6. reseating RAM modules ( at first i thought it was RAM error not VGA since i searched for generic bios beeps)
  7. i did MemTest86 (to be sure ram was ok)

only thing i can think of at this point is swap card with my brother, to check how it will work in different PC, while i'll be able to check if 6700XT works fine in mine.

i'm kind of skeptical to CPU or GPU defect since it did work fine for 2 weeks before changing case fans, and i have no idea what happened after that... either defect emerged after 2 weeks or there's some random thing happening

Problem was a display.

It randomly stopped answering PC calls if it is plugged in, hence no VGA output.

Hi @jan69694

Do the new fans draw more power than the original ones? If the power rating (W) is not shown on the fan you can work out how much maximum power they use by using the Ohm's Law formula of P = E x I . Look for the E and I values on the fan label. (P = power in Watts, E = voltage in Volts and I = current in Amps)

Just asking because according to the specifications for the GPU, the minimum PSU wattage requirement is 850W and you have only got 650W so you may be pushing the limits of your PSU anyway.

old case ones were 12V *0.3A so 3.6W and new ones are 12V *0.12A so 1.44W

old CPU one was 12V *0.13A so 1.56W and new one is 12V *0.12A so again 1.44W

so net usage is lower by 6.6W

at first i did some more benchmarking and stress testing on GPU to tune voltage

and since GPU is 350W and CPU ~120W, we have 470W+ RAM, drives and all *should* be max 550W (ofc i know we want headroom, but i had that one and hoped to leave it for time being, and eventually go for seasonic 1000W for future-proofing)

i didn't seem to have any power issues while testing in heaven benchmark (everything seemed stable in GPU-Z nor any flickering)

Just did a quick check with some online motherboard PSU calculators and they all show in the range of 650-699W given the specs that you posted.

It's strange that the GPU card manufacturer specifies minimum 850W unless they're just trying to cover themselves, Then again they should know their product as they designed it

i think they want to cover up for most power hungry options out there, being intel processors like 12900K or 13900K going with 250W power draw (i think top case was 390W total power draw on blender render test, so idle GPU in this case)

and tbh in normal use i didn't see gpu go over 120W draw from what programs show, and idle is 6-20W, mild use goes up to 60W... so GPU would have to either ramp to 100% on start or system would have to know and calculate that

so 600-700W should be 100% GPU utilization and 100% CPU which happens very rarely and i'd would probably have to run 3dmark/furmark and blender test at once to force that utilization

still problems looks like some kind of mismatch? since there are no problems displaying output but at first there's an error after longer period of being powered off

edit: ramping up to 100% on start could be possible with fans going 100% since it doesn't have controll at first, so i'll try swaping for card with recommended 650W

Swapping GPU cards may be the best option as least to prove if it is with the card or perhaps the motherboard.

Power drain when PC is switched off for a long time?

Really stupid thought but check the voltage of the RTC coin cell battery on the motherboard (printed on battery) and make sure that it's inserted securely.

This battery maintains the BIOS settings and strange things can happen on startup if its voltage drops below 2.5V

Just an update to PSU related testing, changing GPU ended with same no VGA output (this time PSU was within specs)

At this point i reseated CPU since changing cooler fan could end up in changing pressure on CPU, so just to be safe i went with it, sometimes it helps with random things...?

i did have problem earlier that my MB battery was dying after 3-4 hours if pc was not plugged in, so i had 2-3 ocassions where i had my bios settings fully reseted, at this point i have a new battery installed
