MacBook Pro 2017 (A1708) unable to see OWC Aura Pro NT SSD

My MacBook Pro 2017 (A1708) SDD has been giving me issue, it works intermittently. When it works it works as expected and other times boots up to a flashing question mark folder.

I updated the machine to MacOS 13.2 and swopped out the SSDs and was not able to see anything in disk utilities. The drive does not pick up at all.

Reinstalled the old/original Apple SSD and the machine works the same as before.

Any advice will be appreciated, thank you.

What is the version of macOS which you are working with? Both the original SSD as well as what you installed onto the OWC.

This sounds like a file system type of issue.

I had macOS Ventura 13.2 installed on the original Apple SSD. I was unable access the OWC drive in disk utilities, using command + r or with a bootable USB.

Not sure if I am missing a step to get the drive visible in disk utilities.

@glegrange - This is quite odd! So both the original and thumb drives are running the same macOS version.

Often we see issues when mixing file system versions like Sierra or older (HFS+) Vs anything newer High Sierra and newer (APFS). The systems firmware gets upgraded so it can boot from the newer OS and Disk Utility also gets a few tweaks.

Have you spoken to OWC? I would do that you might have a bad drive here.

@danj I have returned the SSD and waiting for the refund to be actioned. Seems a bad drive is the only explanation.
