Keyboard and Trackpad no longer work after reassembly

Hi There,

I was having thermal issues with my macbook pro so I decided I would repaste the device having repasted many dell laptops in the past. Everything went swimmingly in the dismantling process. However, upon reboot the trackpad and keyboard no longer work.

Steps attempted.

Reset NVRM and SMC.

Reseated the trackpad cable as well as inspected for any bends or tears.

Reseated just about every connection in the device.

Checked the System Report in which no Internal USB device is found. Only the backlight and touch ID pop up as well as the mouse, keyboard, and ethernet dongle that is plugged in via usb-c.

I've read through some other posts and came to the conclusion that is most likely the trackpad cable. My only concern is that I am still receiving haptic feedback when pressing on the trackpad which would lead me to believe the cable is in tact. Any Ideas or input on this?

Thanks!

Could you have damaged the cable in the process? Inspect the edges for cuts/tears also check the cable ends. The feedback only means that part of the circuit is working.

I actually just went and grabbed another cable out of an extra macbook we had laying around the office. Same thing. Haptic feedback on the trackpad itself but no movement or input from the keyboard.

I did at one point accidentally screw an incorrect length screw into the little brace connector that goes overtop of the trackpad cable. I noticed a very quiet crunching noise before backing the screw back out. Do you think its possible I damaged the port on the motherboard itself?

@Jonathan Young - Ouch! Yes that is a possibility!

You’ll need to find the schematics and boardview drawings to follow the trace lines testing each from the connector.
