Strange and Modified looking iPhone 6s

Hi All,

(I've already posted to apple support with no luck)

I've purchased 2 iPhone 6/6s from a salvage/e-waste store for a very low price. 1 iPhone 6 works perfectly. The other 6s came in pieces and with some strange modifications (pictured) and frog-tape covering the back (I have verified the device is not counterfeit.) I am curious if the device can be repaired and if the boards were made to steal my information. On the other functional device, I have added my debit card to apple pay and have signed into my google/icloud accounts. I have not recognized anything strange with the device nor have seen any fraudulent charges on my debit card. I am hoping that someone can let me if someone could let me know if the device can be repaired safely and if i should keep using the working one or discontinue use of the device. Thanks

The phone works with no issues (except Touch ID) thanks everyone for letting me know if the device was safe to use or not.

Hi Rys,

From the picture you posted, it's obviously an iPhone 6S; the inside of the 6 looks almost identical, but the placement of the display connectors confirms that it's a 6S - or started life as one, anyway.

Someone has mounted two extra circuit boards over the iPhone's logic board, for what purpose I can't even guess. The lower board appears to be there for the purpose of adding an extra connector of some sort, but I can't make out what it's supposed to be without seeing the front side of it; it could possibly be some kind of card reader maybe, or to provide some other kind of connection like say an HDMI port (although I don't think that's what it is).

The other board has about three of what looks like some kind of IC, could be something like a PIC microprocessor, but I have no idea what it's for.

Finally they've done something funky with the battery; I'd be curious to know what's under that metal? plate there.

Basically it might be some kind of science experiment, but I doubt the screen would fit back on correctly with the addition of those extra boards, so it's not like you could pass it off as an unmodified phone, not with the screen sticking out like it would.

I would probably start out by trying to figure out how the two circuit boards are attached to the original logic board. Is there any kind of soldered wiring between the logic board and the added ones? I don't see any connection between the two new boards, so it doesn't look like they're meant to work together, that is unless whoever started this project didn't get that far in their project.

If you can safely remove those two boards and whatever is going on in the battery compartment, at that point it might be worthwhile to connect up a screen and battery and see if it powers up. As long as you don't find any modified circuitry on the original logic board itself, I wouldn't worry too much about the possibility that it was made to steal your information. A full restore of the phone would eliminate the possibility of malware installed on it too.

Luckily, there was no solder on the board and chips themselves, they were just sticked on with adhesive and a connection to the charging port cable which was cut. I've already disposed of the chips. Strangely, the one on the bottom had a micro usb port on it. The battery plate (which was plastic) had nothing under it, just a lot of adhesive. Anyway, thank you so much for your reply!

@Rys S Interesting - I wonder of someone was trying to convert an iPhone to use a micro USB port. That would make a certain amount of sense, but the lightning port conversions I've seen, like converting it to USB-C, all replaced the original port rather than trying to add on something like that port you have. The fact that the lightning port flex was cut would lend credence to the idea of a conversion, but obviously they didn't get very far on it.

So it looks like you'll need at least three parts to get that phone running again; a screen, a battery and a lightning port assembly.

Of course, none of that explains that extra circuit board, so who knows? But hey, if you can get it going with just those parts, it won't be a bad deal.
