What battery does A2338 EMC3578 take?

I have a A2338 EMC 3578 That does not charge past 38% or there about. It can sit for days on charger and never get to full. Trying to see if its the battery that is the problem? Second, what battery does it take? Can you only buy a genuine battery if you buy the whole top case with the battery in it?

Tested with known good chargers and it does recognize that it is on power when connected.

I tried to charge it while coconut was running . It only got to 6.59V and soon there after it shut off. Tried to charge with my charger and it didnt even want to start charging. Went back to their charger and it started to charge but at 2 V something.

Can she go to The apple store and have it replaced for free?

it got a little bit better with optimized charging turned off. It went up to 19 watts charge but it stopped charging 1 minute later.

But i will have her go to Apple and see if they replace the battery for free.

38% is sort of an odd number but I would check a few things first. See if you’ve got Optimized Charging turned on. It can be found under Battery settings in System Preferences. Other than that I would download Coconut Battery and see what it has to say about your battery health. Attach the screenshot of your results to your original answer and we can take a look.

As far as which battery it takes, the battery for this MacBook doesn’t have a specific part number that I know off hand. Most vendors identify it simply as the Battery for the A2338 MacBook Pro or by it’s year designation (M1 2020 or late 2020).

And yes. If you want an OEM Apple battery, they only sell them as a part included in the top case assembly. AASPs and the Apple Store offer a Battery Only price point for top case replacement. Which varies by model. But is about $199 USD usually.

To add to Alisha C’s answer - If the battery is bad you should bring the system to Apple to get it replaced under an extended warranty. While technically your warranty coverage has expired (unless you have AppleCare or live in a country which requires two years of coverage) Apple should replace the battery as I would find it hard you’ve burnt 1000 cycles which is the expected life in such a short window of time.

So be quick here with the CoconutBattery snapshot so we can be sure of things as your window of time is very short to get a free repair.

@danj Agreed. I think there is a warranty specifically on the battery for two years. And if it’s swollen, I believe it’s three years. It’s written into Apple’s documentation somewhere for internal reference, but I don’t know that it’s publicly mentioned anywhere.

I had to use it occassionally when I was doing Authorized repairs and I don’t recall the details for sure, but it’s definitely worth looking into.
