Fake hot warning, can't figure out what is it

Block Image

Hey,

So I have this iPhone 11 and its giving a fake hot warning. If I disconnect the power button it will boot up but after 3 minutes it will restart and so on. At least I can do panic logs but in the panic logs it will only show the the faults on the power button (i think).

NAND, Button power, wifi and another one which I don't remember.

Or is there any way I can check the panic logs even with the phone on the hot warning message?

Can anyone help me out trying to solve this problem? Thanks!

Hey, first of all thanks a lot for your replys.
After replacing the lightning port and the power button cable, it still gives the same problem so I´m guessing it´s because of the motherboard right?

This type of problem is hard to diagnose over the internet. If it landed on my bench I would remove and install the logic board into a known good housing this would rule out or confirm if it’s a parts issue or a board issue but unfortunately this is not feasible for most people.

When it comes to temperature warnings the first thing I would be looking for is NTC lines "Negative Temperature Coefficient" The NTC circuits I would rule out first are:

·         Lattice Projector.

·         Power button.

There are other NTC circuits that can also become faulty due to cracked or torn pads between the two layers of the board. However I would defiantly try replacing the power button flex assembly first as this would be the most likely culprit. You could also try and boot with the lattice projector disconnected but I cannot remember if this will cause it to restart.

I never drop it so I will skip for now the others NTC circuits.

i´m not the most tech savy but lattice projector is something about the front cameras right? I will be replacing the battery and replacing the power button flex.

Thanks!

@joaodiogo Lattice projector is on the front camera assembly. Try not to disturb this while replacing the battery and power flex as if it gets damaged you will lose face ID as it is paired to the logic board.

If I unplug the power button, the error hot warning goes away but then it starts the 3m reboot

完成的

@joaodiogo It is normal for your phone to restart every 180 seconds with the power button disconnected. After you replace the power button flex hopefully the temp warning should be gone. Make sure you purchase the part from a reputable supplier that has good reviews for this part.

@imicrosoldering Thanks! I´ll do it and post the updates here!

@repairedit, I have to respectfully disagree that the panic logs aren't needed; indeed, there are many problems being submitted to this site that could only be solved using the panic logs; I've personally fixed my grandson's iPhone X when the panic log correctly pointed me to the lightning port assembly being bad.

@joaodiogo, Please take a screenshot or download of any panic logs you have present on your phone; the first page of each is usually sufficient, but full logs won't hurt. Add them to your question and we'll help you track down the issue. That three minute reboot cycle is a key piece of information, as that's exactly how often the iPhone scans its sensors, so at the very least we should be able to get your reboot problem fixed, and hopefully the false overheat issue as well.

Adding images to an existing question - iFixit Repair Guide

Here's a page showing how to use a couple of different tools to read phone status and panic logs; I'm not familiar with the first one listed but have used 3uTools.

Hey @dadibrokeit , thanks for your answer. I already editted the original post with a picture of the panic logs but (correct me if i´m wrong here), isn´t normal give those errors if I have disconnected the power button?

I did this to be able to download the panic logs.

@joaodiogo Holy moses, I have never seen a panic log with that many sensors listed as missing! @flannelist, can I pull you in here for a look?

完成的

@dadibrokeit if I have the power button disconnected, is normal some of them are there, right?

完成的

@joaodiogo Yes, normal for some (usually mic2) but not all. Although the fact that you’re getting it to boot when that is disconnected would lead me to think it may still be the issue. @imicrosoldering mentioning to test with known good parts is a stellar idea.

Although it makes me think of this video. It's long so I'll summarize, though it's a fascinating watch if you're into that kind of thing. The phone in this video was getting that same temp warning, throwing a PRS0 missing sensor error. Which is on the charge port flex. But known good charge port reintroduced the issue. Ultimately it was an issue in the communication between the top and bottom portions of the logic board. Could be something similar in your case, but I would want to rule out parts before diving into that rabbit hole.

@flannelist Hey, first of all thanks a lot for your reply. I´m trying to get more into the repair world and it´s amazing how helpful this community is.

About the video, I watched almost until the end. I like it, a lot!

About the phone, I will probably order a new power button and a charging port to replace them on the phone. If not, I guess I´m big trouble. I will update here after.

Thanks!

Hi João,

Taking a look at the missing sensors, you're right that there's at least one of them that's a direct result of the power button being disconnected; the mic2 sensor is on the power flex, so that one's to be expected.

However, there are a couple others that shouldn't be there under those circumstances. The Prs0 sensor is on the charge flex and shouldn't be affected by the power button flex. Also TG0B and TG0V are battery sensors that you shouldn't be seeing either. Here's some relevant information from @flannelist's excellent iPhone Kernel Panics Wiki page..

To get to cause, keep reading past the panic string to find the missing sensor.

At this point you appear to be looking at defective parts on the charging port assembly, the power button assembly, and the battery. To be honest, if it was my phone I would try replacing those parts, but unfortunately there's another explanation for the huge number of errors you're seeing, and it's not good.

It's entirely possible that the interposer, the part that connects the two boards that make up the logic board, has broken loose and damaged/disconnected some of the signals that are supposed to be passed between layers. While that kind of damage is repairable, it requires specialized equipment to separate the boards, fix any broken traces, reball the solder pads and then heat the entire assembly to solder it back together again. Definitely a job for a board repair house; I think of myself as a fairly expert DIY repair guy but I'd never even consider trying that repair.

Hi Jerry! Thanks a lot for the reply! I´m wondering, if you could guide me on what to do? Fix the problems by buying new parts, sell the remain stuff for parts...? Thanks.

Okay João, here we go. Based on the sensor information in your panic log, the following assemblies are affected

The Battery

Power Button Flex Assembly

Part: Amazon.com: Power Button Flex Cable for iPhone 11- On/Off Keyboard and Flash Light Ribbon with Metal Bracket Holder Replacement Part : Cell Phones & Accessories

Guide: Manuales / Apple iPhone 11 / Power button, flash and top microphone

Lightning Connector Assembly

Guide: iPhone 11 Lightning Connector Assembly Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide (Note, video guide only)
Charge connector iPhone 11 repair - Free guide - SOSav (Step-by-step guide)

You'll also want to buy precut screen adhesive to resecure the screen after you've finished. I suggest you buy two, as it's all too easy to make a mistake and end up with a tangled ball of adhesive. If that happens you don't want to wait until your reorder comes in before you can put your phone back together, so having a backup is a good idea.

Also note that if you purchase through iFixit, you can get something like the battery with a "Fix Kit" that comes with adhesive and the tools needed to do the job. The extra cost is minimal and well worth it.

Although I heartily support iFixit and their repair efforts, I recognize that their prices can usually be beaten by shopping around at places like AliExpress, Amazon and eBay, so feel free to get your parts wherever it works best for you. Keep in mind, though, that their parts are generally of the best quality, and are usually genuine Apple, so you're guaranteed to get a good, quality part.

Finally, keep in mind that per my previous caution, replacing these parts may not fix your phone if the problem is a motherboard separation issue! However, since it's unlikely that repairing the logic board itself is within your capabilities (at least I assume it isn't), this is going to be your only hope at repairing your phone yourself. If you don't want to take the chance that replacing these parts doesn't fix your phone, then you would probably be better off taking it to a repair shop experienced in board level repairs.

I sincerely hope this helps and would really like to hear how everything turns out. Best of luck, João!

Hey! Thanks a lot for you reply! I already have a fix fit from ifixit and this amazing. Done a few repairs to my family members but nothing major.

About the parts, I´m from Portugal and I think I found a reputable seller here but those parts aren´t from apple but high copy´s so I´ll be buying from ifixit.

I will try to do the repairs that you suggested and then update here!

Thanks!

Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then, press and hold the side button until you see the recovery mode screen. You will then need to connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and open iTunes and when prompted press restore. If that does not work you may have a bad battery. Hope this helps!

Edit: You should not need the panic log to solve this problem FYI.

Ouch, sorry to hear that, João. Yeah, it seems very likely you've run into a motherboard problem. There are board repair shops that could likely fix it, but it's difficult to say whether the cost is going to be worth it at this point. Some of our contributors may be able to suggest board houses that could do the work.

Oof. Have you tried new battery as well? I am definitely suspecting this is a board issue anyways, but would rather cover all the bases.

Otherwise. I am super nosey about it, because I genuinely have never seen that many sensors before. I have had it in my brain for a while to try and map all of them out. But alas, I already work a full time job, plus my duties here at iFixit. And there are only so many hours in a day.

It may still be worth having it fixed depending on the end goal (data recovery vs a functional phone). I suspect there's some issue with the collection point for all this data. Temp sensors definitely talk to the PMIC, but not sure about how this information is actually transmitted, and to where. One of these days i will do some science. When I have free time.
