I want to upgrade my mac, but I'm having a problem with the Adapter.

I want to upgrade my mac, but I'm really having a problem. Now that I have bought Crucial p3 and i just want the adapter piece, I don't know where to get the right adapter for my model A1466.

If anyone here has the same device and went through the same experience please feel free to help !!

Because I already bought two adapters, it writes that it is compatible but it is not, it does not work.

Also another question can the adapter affect my device in the future ? Because I read some things like that.

I want to point out that the ssd works but the mac can't recognize it. I think the reason is the adapter

You have a few different issues at hand. First the version of macOS is a sizable factor. Your system default is the older version which doesn’t offer the needed NVMe driver these M.2 SSDs and adapters need. So the internet recovery OS won’t do here directly.

You need to setup an external drive (USB thumb drive) as a bootable OS installer drive. Using the internet recovery option you can start off there and then upgrade it to Mojave or newer. Then using it to setup your internal drive.

Get a 32GB or larger thumb drive. Boot-up under the internet recovery option and do the following:

  • Go to the menus and select Disk Utilities and format the Thumb drive to GUID and a Journaled File System. Then run the OS installer to install the recovery OS.
  • At this point you should be running off of the USB drive. Now we need to download the needed MacOS Mojave of newer that is still supported by the system. Go to the apps store to get the update and download it.
  • Now you can update your USB drive as it needs to be able to load the needed NVMe driver. Then once you’ve done that you should be able to then to repeat the process with your new SSD. Again opening Disk Utility and format the drive and then run the OS installer from the USB drive.

Now as far as using a M.2 drive and adapter in this system, make sure you keep a full backup of your stuff as these drives don’t hold up well. These adapters can be flaky and Apple has a few more signal lines that the adapter and M.2 drives don’t offer which have todo with SSD house keeping tasks. I personally recommend sticking with a real Apple drive or go with OWC or Transcend which offer pin compatible drives.

First of all, thank you for your reply, I didn't understand you well. Should I install the system first and then set the hard disk from the system?

Indeed, a week ago, I downloaded the system on a flash drive in the way you mentioned, and when I open the device, I click on Option, then after that I click on the disk utility, then there I didn't find my device.

@SOLTAN NOURELDIEN - so I’m assuming you are running Sierra off of the USB drive at this point. We now need to upgrade the USB drive to Mojave or newer so it is the version which has the NVMe driver. Only then will you be able to see the internal NVMe drive via Disk Utility.

The pins on the adapter don't seem to match up with the pins on the ssd. On the small part there are 5 pins on the ssd and 4 on the adaptor. Don't know if this is a factor.

@strongbow - The view is a bit confusing, there are 5 pins on both the M.2 SSD as well as the adapter. If you look at the bottom edge of the left hand unit you will see the full count as the ground line doesn’t show up on the other side which only has 4
