Is this an issue that is repairable by replacing the display?

Hi everyone, as you can see in the images attached, I am having an issue with the display on my MacBook Pro A1706. The issue is that if the display has been left turned off for about an hour (or more), it becomes in a state where only the menu bar at the top of the display is visible. Within 5 minutes, this corrects itself, going from only the top menu bar being visible, to slightly lower down on the display being visible, but having alternate lines darker and lighter and glitching out a bit, to the whole display being alternating lines glitching out, and then within 1 minute of these glitches, the display becomes completely fine, like it should be. I am quite sure that this is a faulty display, but can anyone confirm before I spend £200 on a new display? I am also wondering if this could be the flex gate issue that is quite common on these models. There are stress marks on the back of the display assembly around where the hinges are that make it look like it may have been bent too far back at some point. I am not sure as I bought this off eBay as faulty.

Thanks, Philip.

@philhasbread connect an external monitor and see what that displays.

@oldturkey03 Fine with an external display. I think it is likely the display. I have another damaged display which is damaged in another way. I am going to test it with that tomorrow to make sure.

@philhasbread sounds good and let us know how that turns out. This does look like a damaged display.

@philhasbread - I concur with oldturkey03 your display has failed. But what is also important is why! This series placed the T-CON logic within the main body of the system (that little circuit board dangling from the display) seen here MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly

What happens is it cooks! As it’s so close to the CPU’s heatsink, and when the vents are blocked and/or the dust buildup within the fan is heavy the T-CON cooks when left running like you encountered.

So it’s important to clean the dust fully out and don’t use your system on a fluffy surface that can block the vents, and lastly install a good thermal monitoring app like TG-Pro which I find offers what you need to see things and even push the fan a bit more when it’s needed.
