no connecting to computer but will charge
iphone will charge but will not connect to computer so i cant use it as needs updating before will let me use

If the battery is completely dead, or you have the red battery indicator after start up, leave it charge about 20 minutes on an AC connector.
If it gives you more trouble, plug it into your computer then press and hold the power and home button for about 10 seconds to go into recovery mode, itunes should detect the iphone at that point.
