Upgrading existing SSD and HDD

I recently discovered that the factory built in SSD (250GB Toshiba) and HDD (1GB Western Digital) are not fully compliant with the Intel 6GB (link speed) E-SATA chipset used by Apple in the mid 2011 iMAC i7 logic board.

If I check the system information only 3GB (negotiated link speed) will be supported. After a little bit of search I found out that Apple is using cheaper 3G devices instead of 6G in their 27" Intel i7 iMAC flagship. A little bit annoying if you spent that money not getting the best.

However, I am just curious if it would be possible to replace these existing SSD/HDD devices with real 6G technology. Form factors should not be the problem. There a couple of options like

- OWC Mercury 6G SSD with 250-480GB

- Seagate Barracuda 6G HDD with 7200rpm 1-3TB

just to name a few...

Guess I do not expect typical problems with the termal heat / fan connector or the missing SATA cable, because as far as I know the 27" mid 2011 iMAC has it all installed by factory default even if you have it already ordered with SSD and HDD.

Finally, I am not sure and would like to get some comments and thoughts. Are there any problems to expect I do not see?

Many thanks in adavance.

Regards, Matt
