Unstable charging on a MacBook Pro

Hello there guys! Hope someone can help me to figure out what's going on.

So I have a Late 2017 Macbook Pro and for a while now I have a problem with charging. If I unplug the mac for a while and let it fall to low percentage, sometimes when I try plugging it back in it's not reacting to it in any of 4 USB-c. Like nothing is happening it doesn't start charging. All I can do is trying plugging it in and out and hope that it will work. Occasionally it will start charging by itself but sometimes it doesn't.

And here comes another issue, if I will let it turn off with no charge - It's a really big hustle to turn it back on again. Sometimes it's not going to be working for days because it just won't charge. I mean it turns on, shows an empty battery icon and turns off again - while it's plugged in but not reacting to the charger. The Only thing that can help after that is SMC reset, but I have to try it like literally about a hundred times. After desperately doing it for hours it will start charging again and work as usual.

So what things I've already tried:

  • Trying different charging cables (including those at Apple store) - no difference.
  • Different power adapters - no difference.
  • Replaced the USB port module on one side - no difference.
  • Replaced the Macbook battery - no difference.

So if anyone has any idea what can be causing that and how (or if) it can be fixed?

Cheers.

Hi

Have you tried a different charger at all

It could be a cable issue of its consistent over all ports

Thanks:-)

@hellomacos yep, I actually mentioned that in the post, tried multiple cables and multiple adapters, so yeah, that's not it, wish it was

Hi

Sorry I never saw the bullet points at the bottom XD

After reading all the bits that you have replaced I would take it to a board repair shop or if your comfortable with the board repair side of things as it’s sounds like the charging circuit may have failed in one way or another

The chips used in the circuit (CD3215) can fail if the something goes wrong on the board side of things which can result it this sort of behaviour

Thanks:-)

Ok, that's an option I think, wonder if it's part that can be replaced or I need to change the whole board? Is there a way I can diagnose it myself

At this point it sounds like the charging control logic within the main logic board is having a problem. To be sure I would install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery as well as get a USB-C power meter like this one Temu USB-C meter Then you can monitor the power going in and the batteries state.

Post a snapshot of CoconutBattery main window and the battery info tab opened so we can see the batteries health and chargers charge rate.

Hey, don't know how to post pictures here but there's the link to the screenshot:

Well you have an old battery! Batts have a limited life span both by cycles and age. This battery is now six years old, Lithium Ion batts old last around five years at best, while the cycle count is under the 1000 expected max. So you do need a new battery here I would still like to get a better read using the meter to make sure the charging logic is OK.

完成的

@danj well not exactly, I mean it was manufactured long ago I guess, but It was never used, I installed it like couple months ago max, and cycles are at 32 now. The problem started before that with old battery that's why I replaced it.

@darktreno - Is not the run time it’s just the age.

Look at it this way… Over time the chemistry of something breaks down. I found an old jar of strawberry jam in the back of my cupboard instead of being nice and Red it was Brown! It was never opened, it’s just sitting back there to be found.

Batteries are sadly no different! Just sitting they breakdown.

But as I explained you still have a second issue which is the key problem which is within the charging control logic on the main logic board. This will require someone who has deeper skills to locate which component/s are failing or some other damage.

@chanki - Why did you do that? The issue is more often the comparator load resistors.

Thank you for answer me! Dan.

I'm not an expert. That's what a nearby private repair shop said.

But It is not repaired ...

This is exactly the same symptom i have.

@chanki - let’s get a better idea what’s going on. Install this Gem of an App CoconutBattery with the charger plugged in under charge (battery is less than 80% charged). Take a snapshot of the Apps main screen posting it here so we can see it.

I upload my battery info @Dan

Thanks. But it's charging watt is different in my outlet watt monitor

完成的

@chanki - How is the wattage different? While it might not be exact, it should be close, also ther is a bit of a delay as the SMC is a polled value which is slower than a USB-C power meter will show as it’s a real time meter.

I don’t see any issues within CoconutBattery. I would recommend doing a SMC reset again as it’s possible SMCdidnt get its values cleared when you replaced the battery. Sometimes I’ve had to disconnect the battery, with nothing connected, press and hold the power button a good 15sec to fully drain the logic board.
