Screen not working after water damage

My phone was submerged in water (shallow puddle, but it was pouring out) for several hours. Fortunately it was powered off at the time. I gave it a day to dry out, then opened it up and tried to finish drying it out as best I could without isopropyl alcohol. After turning it on, the screen had a large amount of water still between the touchscreen and the lcd, but was functional (it had already had some water damage in there). A couple hours later, it starts going on the fritz, with the lcd not working but touch still functional and the lcd starting back up after power cycling the phone. The next morning, the phone itself still works (my alarm went off, power button still works, home button still works) but the lcd will not turn on, and I think touch has stopped working as well.

To preface the question itself, I know I messed up. I should have left it longer to dry, and with that amount of water damage, I should have cleaned it properly before powering it on. With that said, what can I do now? Is it worth it to try replacing the screen? To get my hands on some alcohol and try cleaning it properly?

Update (09/05/2022)

I have brought my phone in to a repair shop with good reviews and experience in water damage as of midafternoon Friday. Hopefully it's just the screen that's dead and nothing else - if all else fails, I have a backup from Thursday night, but I really like my phone, so hopefully it'll be back up and running soon after being cleaned properly

Hi @cyrene

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair.

The first thing to die with water damage is the screen. You cannot save it you have to replace it with a new one once the phone is completely clean and dry.
