iPhone 5S "press home to upgrade" unusual issue

A long while back I broke my old iPhone 5S, and I just got around to fixing it about a week ago. It went well, but now I'm stuck on another problem, one I haven't found a fix for yet. The phone was about to be upgraded to the newest iOS version before it got broken, and I don't remember the passcode, which I need in order to continue with the upgrade. Whenever I plug it into my computer, it isn't recognized by it. The data on the phone is what matters to me, so I can't just wipe it and start over. Any and all help would be incredibly appreciated.

UPDATE: It can connect to a computer but only in recovery mode. Updated via iTunes successfully but still stuck on the passcode requirement,

how long ago did it break as the battery might not be charging, if it shows anything on the screen try a different cable or charge port

I am able to charge the battery just fine, the hardware is fine as far as I can tell. It's the software that is the issue, as it's in the middle of an update. I can try with different cables and USB ports, but my newer phone can connect to my computer just fine with the same cable and same USB port. It's possible the lightning charger port replacement part was damaged in some way, to where it can charge the phone but not access the information on the phone, but I'm not sure.

If you have a windows pc try downloading the iTunes app for windows and then connecting the phone to your computer.

the phone should show up in the app. Try backing up from there.

@tech_ni Sometimes it only shows up in the iTunes app.

I got a boot looping 5s once and it only showed up in the app, the pc didn't recognize it.

I have the iTunes app already downloaded, and when connected to the computer via a charging cable to a USB port, the phone itself isn't recognized by my computer or iTunes. I could try this with a different computer and or a different charging cable and such, but my new phone can connect to my computer with the same cable and USB port just fine, so I didn't initially think to try that. The moment I'm able to access the data though, I can back up the phone and dump the data from it onto a phone that isn't updating, hopefully.
