Why does my screen work intermittently?

Hi

I have posted here before but thought Id try again. So , my screen failed on the above device. I replaced the LDVS (data) cable, and made sure all connections are tight and secure. I have shone a light at an angle at the screen to see if the screen shows up any information but does not light up....and it shows nothing.

However, the harddrive and device IS working, the drive starts up and even makes the beep as it registers with Skype....

However, if I leave my Mac Book off for a significant amount of time but plugged in , then the laptop will sometimes work when I switch it on, but not always.

I was going to buy a new screen to replace it but Im not sure that the screen is the fault. Can anyone help? And could a failing battery lead to this problem?

Many thanks in advance

Assuming the screen is completely black when this happens, you probably have the very common NVidia chip defect:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377

Apple will replace your machine if it's still within the 4-year window detailed in the web page above. I'd take it to the nearest Apple store and tell them you suspect the defect, at which point they will connect it to a testing tool and give you the news when they are done. I would print out the web page above, just in case you are unlucky enough to get a "genius" who is unaware of it. Some of the earlier models of relevant machines are starting to fall outside of the 4-year window, but a lot are still eligible.

If you feel like doing more testing, you can always connect an external display. If there is no image on an external display, that is further evidence that the chip on the logic board is bad, and that there is nothing wrong with the display hardware.
