Keeps killing hard drives and freezing

Hi all

I have this a1708 I'm trying to fix.

It's a crazy one on testing it the ssd was not recognised at all but the system would boot fine from an OS on my external hard drive.

I orderd a used ssd for this model from ebay, installed it and it showed up no problem installed os from Internet recovery and all seemed well.

After a couple of hours of use I try to wake the screen and find the flashing folder icon again, and once again the hard drive is toast not recognised at all. But still boots fine from external drive

So I order a ssd converter that let's me install an m. 2 hard drive,

The system sees it I erase the drive and start to install macos but it gets about half way through reboots and just shows a flashing folder again.

Also testing the machine when running for around an hour on my external drive os the screen goes black with a cursor and I can't do anything but shut it down and reboot.

I've also noticed that the internal fan dosent spin at all. Like never even when it's toast hot. (I've tested the internal fan and it's not faulty

Any help or advice on this massively appreciated

Update (03/10/2022)

I also just noticed that when booting into recovery from cold boot I can see the internal ssd in disk utility and choose it as a location to install monetary.. (that fails half way though) but if I boot from my external drive into monteray and go to disk utility the internal ssd is not viable and if I try to install monteray from within this os it dosent give me the internal drive as an option

What is the SSD drive you are using if you are using something than an Apple drive.

Hmmmm...... If the fan isn't running at all, that concerns me. I assume when you say you tested it, that means you tested it in another machine?

Have you run Apple diagnostics? It probably won't tell you a lot, but it might point you in the right direction at least.

The drive I'm using now is a 128GB M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe Ssd in an adaptor,

I tested the fan by swapping out with a known good bottom tray containing working fan, battery, track pad and keyboard,

I did install a programme called something like istat last night that let me set the fan speed and when manually turning it on it powers up and spins, but only when turned on with this third party software

@atosoup - Go back to the Apple SSD is your system working then?

完成的

No, both the original apple ssd and the second apple ssd I purchased appear completely dead, just not recognised by the system at all.

Sounds like the M.2 adapter damaged the SSD slot. The onboard diagnostics won’t test the drive fully.

If you can boot up under an external drive that’s all you can do to validate the logic board is OK besides the SSD connector.

I dont think the m.2 adapter has caused any damage as I only purchased this out of desperation after the macbook had already killed 2 original apple ssd's, and having the m.2 adapter plugged in is the only way I can get any sign of life out of the internal drive section of this mac,

When plugging back on either of the two oringnal drives I get nothing detected, if I plug the m.2 in I can see it and start an install of monteray but it fails half way through

@atosoup - Still doesn't change the fact the SSD connector is likely damaged.

Why would you think this? And is there anyway of checking this with a meter to be sure, or would you suggest I replace the ssd connector?

完成的

@atosoup - I've seen a few damaged by people pulling up on the SSD before sliding it out. Take a nice tight and clear image of the connector end at about 45 degrees and post it here 在已经存在的问题里加入图片 so I can see it.

Thanks Dan appreciate your help on this so much, I'll get those images in a few hours when I'm home.
