Why isn' the trackball working?
trackball works horizontally but not vertically. What's wrong?

Of course you could just cleaning any dirt and debris from around it first and see if that fixes it before paying for the part. Google or eBay are your friends for finding the trackball, just make sure you have the right one by checking on the logicboard (under the battery) for the exact model.

If you remember "mouses" with track balls on computers that occasionally had to be disassembled to clean not only the ball but the contact points, (usually 4,) then you basically understand the trackball on the Blackberry. I have removed my trackball, cleaned it with denatured alcohol and also used a Q-tip dipped in the same alcohol to clean the contact points. Might not be a permanent fix due to age but it has worked for me before.
