Device fans turn on and charges, but no display

A friend gave this to me to extract the data on it, but I couldn’t find a reliable way to do that with apple’s proprietary SSD, so I’m trying to fix it now.

The targeted disk mode didn’t work, and I checked some voltages around the board but I didn’t see anything obviously wrong. I accidentally touched the CPU heat sink and it was burn-your-hand-hot, but I don’t know if that’s normal or not.

Is there any way to fix this, or if not, get the data off the SSD? Thanks!

Sounds like the logic board has serious issues. You could replace the logic board and transfer the SSD to it.

The other approach is to get the required OWC ENVOY PRO which will allow you to transfer the data over to a new MacBook and still be able to be used as a backup drive.

Is that ssd reader known to be reliable? I tried a different one and nothing showed up but I believe it was because the reader itself wasn't good.

@belorianrepair - Who did you use?

Apple uses a custom SSD which requires one designed for it. You can't use any M.2 case as they won't work. I've had a few of these and they all work just fine.

@belorianrepair - What can I say, there's a lot of junk sold that doesn't really work or barely works.

Over the years I needed to get newer versions of the case as Apple altered their design so to have a way to salvage users data I needed to get newer units even from OWC. But thats not OWC's fault its just the nature of a moving target.

@danj noted, I'll try out this case. Thanks!
