iPhone X occasionally loses carrier/cellular connection

Hello, recently I noticed that my iPhone X was always low on battery power (although battery health showed 87%). This led me to finding out that my iPhone X occasionally loses cellular connection and reconnects back. This happens quite a few times during the day so the battery drainage was huge. Then the connection drops started to become more frequent enough so that it was almost impossible to surf the web or use any app while on cellar connection. Sometimes when I was talking on the phone, the connection was lost, so the phone was giving “Call Failed” error and a loud noise could be heard from the speaker. I recently had my battery changed and the repair shop attempted to fix the issue (they thought it was an antenna issue) but the problem still remains. I have tried updating the iOS, resetting the network setting and I even had a complete factory reset, still hasn’t been fixed. Does anyone know how to fix this?

It's possible that the physical SIM card is the problem, getting a new one from your carrier could be a possible solution. The iPhone X's SIM card holder is not modular or else I would suggest to replace that. Good luck...

Sorry for late reply first check the original back housing using 3u tool if changed or not because sometimes network issues is caused by back housing change. In other hand you said battery draining is huge but you didn't say if the phone is overheating or not….if the battery draining faster that means that there is short circuit in baseband circuit/RF circuit which leads to unstable network so do the following to know the cause of your problem.

  1. Dial *#06# to get IMEI number
  2. Setting>>general>>about then check for IMEI number, model firmware and ICCID(when sim card inserted) if you miss one of mentioned above in either method the problem is related to Baseband circuit if no information missing then the problem is related to RF circuit. After confirmation what you have to do is to separate logic board then connect it with iSocket then test to know if the problem was caused by bonding pads or not.if problem not solved do cosmetic inspection on RF circuit the do diagnosis by measuring bonding pads.if bonding pads are okay replace baseband PMU and there some chips that I can't remember for now I will comment them tomorrow

This could be as @csam15 said a faulty SIM, but if not, board issues would be at the top of my list. There are a bunch of Baseband rails that go through the interposer board (the little riser that connects the two iPhone X boards) and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the issue.

@flannelist What about changing the antenna. Could that possibly fix the issue? I’ve never opened up an iphone and I’m not familiar with all of the technical stuff so I’m not sure if I can even test out whether its a board issue but I guess I can try to change the antenna.

Recently the issue got even worse. Now I constantly get disconnected from wifi and I have to manually reconnect every time I want to see if I have got any new notifications. I also noticed that the phone is hot to touch more regularly than before.

@S Y It's possible it's the antenna, although unless they are torn or the connection to the board is weak, antennas are often not overly sophisticated and in my experience are not likely to go bad.

If it's a board issue, it may be complex to troubleshoot regardless of your technical skill, but I know these sort of issues are not uncommon among any of the newer iPhones. The board is 2 layers sandwiched together and issues can result from mild bends to the board or hard drop which lead to intermittent connection or lack of connection between the 2 boards entirely.

@flannelist I see :(

Thank You everyone for the replies, I might try changing the antenna, if the issue still remains I guess I'll have to get a new phone.
