Message says “replace drum soon”. Machine is an MFCLC 2700 DW?

When it comes to Brother, the drum is split off from the toner, and both are considered "consumables". Yours uses the DR-630.

However, I am NOT going to suggest buying a new drum; rather, I encourage you to reset it and use the existing drum a 2nd time - you can often reset the Brother printers 2 times comfortably and get a bit more use out of the drum itself and unlike others who use it as a waste toner carrier, there's no risk in that department. The main thing is to remember that 2nd reset is when Brother drums truly decline; you can usually squeeze ~25k good pages out of one drum. Going for a 3rd reset is a gamble; it may have problems with print quality; the other issue is whether you can reset the drum mid-cycle or not; if not, you have an inaccurate drum counter and cannot rely on it until you buy a virgin and reset again. Don't go for more than 1 "free" reset here. Brother is the last man standing still using corona wire due to cost, which is why their drums do not have the 40-60k+ cycles others have gained with the PCR design. See here for reset instructions.

The reason I’m willing to mention this is Brother is frankly, conservative about the drum ratings for some reason - even the color lasers are just as conservatively rated at times, and those are a bigger issue with cost because of how Brother does it. You buy all 4 drums and reset all 4 at the same time; you can't reset and replace individual drums (though I will add this isn't just a Brother issue; Lexmark makes you pick between a black drum+developer where you carry the CMY developers or a full CMYK drum+developer, and doesn't let you buy the drum alone, and does the same; the developers are replaced with the drum unit. The 3rd party vendors are happy to sell you the drums piecemeal, but it causes issues with the counter unless you can reset piecemeal (it varies a bit).

EVEN THE RATING ON ITBs is conservative, but less of a lie (100k average, which is common on user-replaceable ITBs). Anything sub 100k is conservative, 100k is probably about right. Between the insane conservatism of their drum ratings AND THE lack of override out on the color lasers, I will not use a color laser from Brother. Let me assume the risk of damage!

The risk you take doing this is some of them you cannot easily reset mid-cycle, so you do run the risk of an unexpected drum wear out mid-cycle if you do this and will need to deal with an inaccurate counter until you buy a new drum and reset it properly. If that risk isn’t something you like, you can find remanufactured drums for this printer for a fraction of the price.
