Power button works as long as I don't shutdown+only if left on Sleep.

This is a weird one!

After replacing the SSD with an Aura Pro and getting it correctly recognized, the MBP works continuously but ONLY if left on sleep when not in use. If I shut down normally I can’t use the power button to startup again. For that reason I can only use this p/t.

I need to open the Mac back up each time I want to use it , unplug the battery connector, unscrew & re-insert the SSD, put the battery connector back in, screw the back down again and THEN it’s ready to go again but only (as described above) for a single (extended) session. Restart works OK but if I shutdown and then use the power button to start up, nothing. it’s dead!

Is this something as simple as the power button/MagSafe needing attention/repair?

Hello Dan. I’ve added Coconut Battery to my Mac and here are the results:

Update (10/08/2021)

Before installing another battery tomorrow when I’ve got more time, I’ve tested both the battery and the sensors using Techtool.

Here are the results of the Sensors test.

and for the Battery

I’d be tempted to give more weight to these tests than the Apple diagnostic, but evidence is evidence. After installing the other battery I’ll let you know what happens. cheers N

@noirguy - Well, your battery looks OK from CoconutBattery so from a power and temp sensor output from within SMC which is via the onboard micro-controller I don't see anything out of place.

But the fact diagnostics fired off a PPT004 error we either have something else that's out of place within the micro-controller data feed to the SMC or your systems logic board SMC logic has a problem.

At this point I would just reach over my desk and plug in a spare known good battery to see if that isolated the issue. But clearly you don't have a spare do you?

If not, this will require a deeper inspection of the logic boards back side which is where the SMC chip is located. But thats me! I know what to look for.

For you I'm thinking this is a bit much, I would try to find someone with deeper micro-electronics skills and access to the schematics and board views to dive into why the logic is messed up.

thanks for all the advice Dan.

fortunately re: a new battery, as luck would have it, I do have a spare battery. the Mac we're talking about is comprised 50% my previously owned Mac (just the Retina screen) and 50% (everything else) c/o someone on Ebay who had a perfectly functioning Mac but whose daughter had accidentally thrown a ball at the Retina screen, damaging it.

I'll fit the fairly new battery I still have from the previous body and also try running Tech Tool Pro to see if I can isolate the problem.

thanks again.

@noirguy - OK so this could be a parts mis-match issue!

You do need to be careful as Apple loves modifying things just enough to hinder things from working properly.

Are you moving parts between exact same models? Refer to EveryMac - Look up to validate the ID Strings of each system as an example MacBookPro12,1 for the Early 2015 13" model.

You’re encountering a latched SMC issue. Whats happening is once the system is running SMC discovers an issue, it then sets the latch state preventing you from restarting. What you are doing when you disconnect the battery and allowing the SSD to discharge the logic so SMC forgets the latch state which allows you to startup cleaning once more but as soon as you shutdown you are down for the count!

So now we know whats happening we need to learn what SMC is seeing that makes it unhappy. Hopefully it gives us a clue!

Here’s a simpler way to flush SMC: Disconnect the battery and this time just press the power button holding it for about 15 sec. plugin your battery that does it.

Now when your startup press the D key to enter into the onboard diagnostics. Did you get any error messages? Let us know then we can figure out what the next step is.

Hi Dan, thanks for the info. I've just done as you suggested.

the result of the diagnostic test has now left me confused.

'The battery requires service. it is not functioning normally thought you may notice a change in its behaviour or the amount of charge it holds. you can continue to use your battery before it's checked without harming your computer.'

Reference code: PPT004

for what it's worth the system is showing the battery is 100% fully charged. the battery pack is perfectly flat with no puffing or visible split in any of the individual packs.

it seems unlikely doesn't it that the battery is the main issue - as when my Mac is powered via the mains, it doesn't need the battery to start up - yet just now I've tried again (as I've done countless times) to turn it on plugged in and.......nothing.

@noirguy - Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see 在已经存在的问题里加入图片

Your systems SMC is telling us one of its sensors is not responding properly. CoconutBattery should help us see why.
