SMC reset required for every boot.

Hi everyone,

I just gave my MacBook to my partner and was working flawlessly up until a few days ago, when it didn’t start. Did a PRAM reset and that fixed the issue. The next day it didn’t, and I had to do a SMC reset to get it working. Now, 2 days later, it needs a SMC reset every time i want it to start. It doesn’t start any other way.

i was wondering if there’s anyway to fix this? I talked to Apple and they recommended me sending it to them (lol nope), but that it might be the battery or the motherboard.

i also disconnected the battery, plugged the system into wallpower which prompted it to boot. After I shut it down and tried pressing the power button while still connected, nothing. So it seems prompt to boot with no battery connected is the most reliable way to make the thing start up.

Because of this, and the weirdness continuing when the battery is disconnected, I’m thinking it’s a motherboard issue instead. Is there any fox other than replacing the motherboard possible? Short on cash and cannot afford a £125 motherboard from eBay. I know how to install it myself though, so that saves some money.

Well, your battery is trouble! I’m suspecting one of the four cells is bad as the status is lying to us!

First your batteries cycle count is beyond the 1,000 cycles you can see here: Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks I’m also sure you are still using the original battery or one that’s been in your system for awhile given the age of your system (2012).

So what about the weird issue where it doesn’t wants to power on when you press the power button after shutting down when connected to wall power only?

@svenwalkaboutre - Your SMC logic is going into a latched state as the power level is not enough to run the system. So what you are doing is resetting it so it has to relearn the failure to then latch up again.

If you can get the onboard diagnostics to work you might be able to get an error code. But Apple messed up the systems firmware and has not fixed it!

Restart your system and press the D key
