Display works for a couple of seconds on startup and then turns off

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone would have the answer to my really strange situation.

Basically, every time I want to turn my MacBook on, I either have to disconnect the battery and then plug it back in and then it will boot up as normal, or I have to reset the SMC every single time and then it will turn on as normal.

When it turns on, the built-in display works for less than a minute and then randomly turns off and then will not turn on again until the machine is shut down and then powered on again.

if connected to my TV via HDMI cable, there is nothing wrong with the picture at all.

Also, when I press on the chassis around the keyboard, the display on my TV flickers and even randomly disconnects, I’m not sure if this is relevant or not, I just thought i should include it.

Also, when the MacBook powers on, it is fine for a bit but then must be plugged into power otherwise it will go to sleep. I don’t think this is a battery issue because I have tried two batteries and the problem still persists.

I’m fairly sure this may be a logic board issue, as I have bought a new display cable and the issue persists. I read somewhere that it may be an issue with a water damaged chip but everything seems to look fine on the board.

If someone could please point me in the right direction I will be forever grateful!

When I hold D while starting up, it says “starting internet recovery” and then displays this error:

Let's run the onboard diagnostics as your reaction is telling me the SMC is latching in a failed condition (having to pull the battery to reset SMC).

Restart your system as you have and press the D key to enter did you get any errors?

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

You should also check the battery. To get a better view of things install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see 在已经存在的问题里加入图片

I have included images of what happens when I enter recovery mode. It also happens when I press "Alt+D" Also, I am fairly sure the turning off issue isn't to do with the battery because I had another battery before this one which acted the same.

What I can tell you is batteries do have a lifespan! Your battery is just old! It’s the original battery your system had (or you swapped it out with other used battery). Note the your batteries cycle count is getting very close to the batteries limit of 1,000 cycles (currently 884) and also consider the age limit is around 2,000 days which is just over three years (yours 3,253 days old). Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks

Bottomline your issue is most likely a worn-out battery. What is hard to explain is the why! Lets look at a mind model of a bunch of containers are water.

The top container is your charger pouring into a second container via a pipe at the bottom. This is at a max rate of 5. Now the second container has a pipe as well that has a max rate of 10. So as long as the tank was full the time it will take will be X, but if the tank is half full then its one half of X and clearly if the container is almost empty then it won’t take long for the water to become a trickle of what the upper tank is able to supply a rate of 5.

So how does this translate to your condition? The battery is the second container but it doesn’t have the ability to hold the amount of energy you require to run. So it starts up as there is enough to get things going but not sustain the system, hence your system shuts down.

But the old battery had way fewer cycles than the current one (I would get you the exact cycle count but I really do not have the time to switch out the batteries again) and it still had this issue!

And the battery issue doesn't explain the display?

When the display turns off, it's almost as if it fully disconnects itself as it fades out and doesn't suddenly cut off. I find that it also ceases to exist from the display preferences and system information display page.

I feel like the random sleep modes when running off of battery and when the display turns off are linked in some way, but not to the battery, as the old one did this and was in "normal" condition.

I appreciate all your help so far!

What happened when you ran diagnostics?

"Restart your system as you have and press the D key to enter did you get any errors?"

I updated the original post to include an image of the error that showed when I tried to run diagnostics

@Blxthe - You'll need to go to an authorized Apple repair shop to run the service version of diagnostics as Apple messed up the onboard diagnostics in some versions of firmware so the onboard version won't work.

Ask nicely as some shops follow Apple's guidelines on repairing older systems Mac products obsolete worldwide. Just ask for them to run the diagnostics only make sure you take note of the error/s. Some independent shops may have the needed service diagnostics.

FYI: Apple Stores won't help you.

But I really think you need a fresh battery even with the display symptom. And most independent shops won't work on your system with the a battery in this state. So you'll need to get that done first anyways,

@danj - Okay, so you think my best bet is to replace this current battery, with the better one i currently have and then go to an apple certified store and ask if they can do diagnostics on it?

Thanks!
