Do I need the temperature sensor for a hard drive to SSD upgrade?

I have done this upgrade on both a 2012 and 2013 iMac and used the included temperature sensor, but I am seeing mixed answers about whether the mid-2017 iMac needs the temperature sensor when performing a HD to SSD upgrade.

I don’t want to spend $70 buying a kit full of parts I don’t need when I have everything from the previous 2 replacements I’ve done. All I need is the screen adhesive and SSD caddy.

No, the newer 2014 onward systems running Mojave or newer don’t need it. Apple altered the firmware which is now able to support the newer SMART release which has the better thermal sensor access that wasn’t presently in the older drives so make sure you are using a newer 2019 or newer drive.
