Charging incorrectly - strangely

The project started with replacing the battery because it had swelled and pushed the screen away from the frame. I damaged the screen in attempting to remove and replace the glue. So, a full screen replacement followed. I now have a nearly fully functioning phone with blemish free screen and back glass.

The phone will not charge properly to calibrate the battery. I have a good Samsung adaptive charger (3) and a good cable. I have run it down to the point it would not turn on. Then on first charge, it took excessively long even if it was only charging at the slow rate. It also would jump percentage and freeze at points. I tried charging powered off at first, but then turned it on to examine the battery stats. I waited until it eventually reached 100% before unplugging. I discharged to 0% again to see if it was only the first charge that was erratic. Nope, second was just as bad. I also at this point dialed the code *#0228# to reset the battery stats after running it back down to 0%. The third and subsequent recharges are going just as bad. It behaves the same on wireless charging. Example, 1/2 hour to charge from 0% to 17% when on, after factory reset, cache cleared, indicating fast charge. Then unplug wait 30 seconds or so, then upon plugging in now reads 51%. Allowed to continue charging and 1/2 hour later 68%. Unplug, wait, plug, 83%. Unplug, wait, plug, 73%. Unplug, wait, plug, 69%… has been for 2 hours. Boot up and still 69% and 1 hour 15 minute ETA to full charge. Somewhere during my attempts while I was discharging it stayed at 1% for 3 hours while playing youtube videos full screen at highest quality before it died.

Checklist: Charger - good, cable - good, USB port - good, wireless charge - good, battery - maybe?, charge control circuit - maybe?

It works, but I cannot trust it will not overcharge the battery even though it may state far less than 100% charge.

What is my next step? I have quite a bit invested to just call it a loss. I feel I may need to reopen the case and check for issues. Clean up connections maybe.

where'd you get the battery from? might want to look at trying to get a replacement. batteries can be bad from the manufacture.

The thing that springs to the front of my mind is that you got a bad battery. As Logixal commented, it is not unheard of to get a new battery that is faulty and as the battery and screen are the only variables that should have changed (and the screen shouldn’t affect charging) that pretty much leaves just the battery.

It is technically possible that the charging circuitry may have been damaged (static discharge or physical damage) but it is unlikely to me. Typically when I see charge circuit issues I will see issues getting the phone to power on or recognize it is charging, but it will typically still show a proper battery percentage.

Thanks. I just wanted to be thorough before submitting a warranty claim on the battery. It was acquired from iFixit. For my final test, I am using the old battery to test the charging. It seems to be charging properly, but it is swelled so I do not want to rely on it. It is charging at an even pace reaching 60% from 0% in 45 minutes on a standard 5V 2.0A charger. The new battery was stuck at 17% in the same time and only 48% after 6 hours, then after a 9 hour pause (unplugged and off) it went to 80% when plugged in then dropping to 76% after 2 hours. Yeah, bad battery.
