Kenmore Elite Fridge - Won't run and Display Not Working 596.78333801

Hello, my fridge stopped working quite suddenly this morning. I watched it go from working to not working with the following symptoms:

  1. Fridge would turn on to begin cooling, then would stop after 2-3 seconds
  2. After the fridge stopped, the display panel on the front would turn off for 2-3 seconds
  3. The display panel would light back up, showing the normal display
  4. The fridge would try to start up again a few seconds later and the entire process would repeat
  5. The fridge cycled like this for ~30m.
  6. Currently, the display is permanently off, and the fridge is not trying to run
  7. I have unplugged the fridge for 10+ minutes and when plugged back in, nothing changed.

I can get the display to light up by hitting any of the buttons, as shown in the picture, otherwise the display stays dark. If I press the water dispenser tab, the display lights up, AND a beeping tone sounds as long as I keep the tab pressed, but no water comes out.

I’ve done some digging but can’t figure out how to get the display into diagnostic mode.. have pressed various button combinations for 5+ seconds and nothing happens.

I cannot find anything about diagnostic mode on this model. But the fact that it tries and fails to cool, and the display boards flashes repeatedly then goes dark, combined with the water not dispensing, makes me think you have a control board issue. Thats usually the case when multiple things like that go wrong.

I agree about the control board. The one pulled from my sisters refer had bad capacitors. I would find that board and eyeball it for bulging capacitors. If you can replace them it would be a cheaper fix than the whole board.

Could be. Also check relays. I've seen WAY too many boards with relays sticking. I'll be honest board soldering isn't my thing so i replace boards. If you're good at that kinda thing then go for it! Can DEFINITELY be cheaper! The relays on the boards, if sticking, can be made to work by giving them a sharp tap (not a hard hit! Just a good tap!!) And they'll engage. That's when you know they're toast. Because tapping them to unstick them may work. But it is temporary. It'll do it again!

Thanks for the feedback! I was looking at the starter relay and capacitor but wasn't sure what that would have to do with the display malfunction.. will check the board

Hi @burker7 ,

Check behind the kick plate (toe plate?) for the tech sheet. (or at the bottom under the refrigerator at the front, if no kick plate). If there it will show how to get into the diagnostics mode.

If it is not there, the tech sheet part number is 12845602 but I can't find it online. You may have better luck.

Here's a link to the parts which may also help.

Hopefully a start
