I was using my computer when it randomly turned off. After trying to turn it back on, I get this screen
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."
I have tired safe mode, but nothing seems to work.
Any ideas?

Hi, Boot into your operating system disk and select disk repair. If this does not work you may need to do an archive and install of the OS. Last resort is a complete erase and install. Please make sure you have a good anti-virus and anti-malware programs installed. Good luck.

rj. I've been asked to look at a friends computer with this same message. Safe mode failed. Repair mode failed.. It contains all the photo's of her 4 children so we're anxious not to erase anything. It's been a long time since I've done anything with windows. Can you explain a bit more about archiving? do you think this is hard drive gone bad? (please say no or I'm not going to be popular)
Jen I am going to recommend pulling the hard drive from the computer and using either a external case or the "swiss army" adapter attempt to read the drive on another computer. If successful copy those files to a memory stick to be on the safe side. Then you can think about archiving--which is just installing the OS and leaving the data alone. I suggest copying the files first because of their importance -- archiving shouldn't cause problems but lets err on the safe side. I am including a link to the adapter for your perusal --mayer and I wouldn't be without one. If you are going to deal more with computers it might be a good item for you to have also. Good luck. I totally agree with Ralph on that one. Back up the drive. There is a way that you can use a USB drive to boot the computer from. Copy the needed files. You do have an error in the windows registry, and I do not believe that it is your hard drive that is on the fritz. After you copy the files, try to repair windows without overwriting your current files. http://pcworld.about.net/magazine/2109p1... tells you how. Sorry, do not mean to butt in here.....
no butting in! helping out.this is vista..boo.. will not boot in any way via advanced modes.Can't get to desktop. I did get an arrow on a black screen at one point. According to friend nothing new etc has been added. I can hear fans, cd drive and hard drive ticking away but no display apart from error. it looks like windows is trying to load..bar moves all the way across and then it just loads and loads and loads then error. gives an 00000086 or something similar.
