Kernel Task at 500%, Startup interrupted, Hardware check no errors

I am having some issues with my MacBook Pro Retina (mid 2014) that I am not able to reproduce or locate.

I will describe my findings really detailed here trying not to miss something.

Two months ago my MacBook suddenly just switched of (black screen, no response). After several attempts restating the device, doing SMC or NVRAM resets it prompted me to a really buggy login screen, that was not usable at all (cursor was in cyan, password line in magenta and some others). In recovery I was not able to reinstall MacOS BigSur because FileVault was locking me out (known BigSur-Bug).

I’ve handed the device to apple support, they’ve told me that the battery is totally dead and that it must be replaced. Knowing that the battery had +1200 cycles I knew that this was clearly necessary. They also did a factory reset, but I replaced the battery with an iFixit Kit because Apple had no batteries in store to fix it.

With the old battery installed I was able to get the device running but with Kernel_Task at approx. 500% it was totally unusable (onboard diagnostics stating that the Battery is damaged). After installing the new battery the device was behaving totally normal with no remarkable Kernel_Task usage (around 5%).

Some days ago I’ve tried to start the Mac (wanted to sell it) and it was behaving totally unresponsive. When I tried to start the Mac it just crashes after a few seconds being in boot-screen. When trying to start it up again by short pressing the power button nothing happens, when holding the power button for less than approx. 3 seconds it directly crashes when the Power Button is released. Only when holding the Power Button for more than approx. 3 seconds it turns on and starts booting. When logged in it shows Kernel_Task at approx. 500% and CPU is limited to 800MHz. However this time, the onboard diagnostics was showing no errors at all.

Coconut Battery is showing good values, I’ve installed Tunabelly TG Pro to check if I damaged a temperature sensor - all showing plausible values.

Does anybody have an idea what could be the problem here and what could be done to fix this?

Lets see what the onboard diagnostics tells us. restart your system and during the startup press the D key to enter. Did you get any error messages?

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Sorry, I've written "Hardware Check" instead of " onboard diagnostics". It shows zero errors (ADP000).

(Also changed "Hardware Check" to " onboard diagnostics" in my description, sorry for the confusion)

How full is your SSD? Are you still using the original one or have you upgraded? If you have what did you put in?

The Mac was set to factory settings by apple. At this point, there is just a test-user installed with a few programs for diagnosis.

SSD is original, 512GB storage (approx. 480GB free)

See what you can do running your system off an external drive. You’ll need to set it up as a Boot drive with a fresh copy of macOS on it. Is your system stable under it?

Unfortunately I am not able to create a bootable drive. There is always an error coming up that the drive could not be formatted correctly. I've tried this now on my new M1 Macbook as well as on the 2019 MBP my GF has. Tried with BigSur, Catalina and Mojave.

At the moment I don't have any other drives here to do further tests. A speedtest using Blackmagic tells approx. 300MB/s read and write. Also the OS is running totally normal, just really slow because of the Kernel_Task clocking CPU to 800MHz.

@luk_t_95 - I'm confused I thought the new battery resolved that?

Can you clarify.

@danj - I thought that the new battery solved the problem. After replacing the old (original apple) battery with the new one (iFixit repair kit) it worked without any problems.

The described problem...

"When I tried to start the Mac it just crashes after a few seconds being in boot-screen. When trying to start it up again by short pressing the power button nothing happens, when holding the power button for less than approx. 3 seconds it directly crashes when the Power Button is released. Only when holding the Power Button for more than approx. 3 seconds it turns on and starts booting. When logged in it shows Kernel_Task at 500% and CPU is limited to 800MHz. "

...came up a few days/weeks later after replacing the battery without using the Mac in between. My assumption is that the new battery is okay because the onboard-diagnosis is showing no errors as it did with the old battery.

I guess that there is another problem which can't be identified by the onboard diagnosis, but I have no clue what it could be.

@luk_t_95 - I think the best thing here is to locate someone local to you who has the deeper skills and tools to fix your logic board as I'm suspecting you have a SMC voltage sensor issue or the SMC its self is having issue,
