When I start my car, it hesistates to turn over?

For the past 6 months, every once in awhile the vehicle does not want to start and hesitates to turn over. It is to new for the starter to be going out. Any suggestions?

Update

The car is a 2005, it has 113,000 miles on it. I just replaced the battery last year.

Melany, there could be plenty of reasons for it. What exact year is it? How old is the battery? How many miles are on it? It could be from corrosion on the battery post, to starter, to starter relay to ECM, so we need to narrow it down a bit....

Melany, does it turn slowly and then it goes faster when you start? Turn your lights on and see if they go dim when you start it? My gut feeling says it's the starter that is failing.

There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) for this problem.

Bulletin No.: 02-06-04-015A

Date: March 07, 2006

TECHNICAL

Subject:

Intermittent No Crank, No Start (Clean Battery Side Terminal Stripped Threads, Replace Battery Cable Bolt)

Models:

2001-2007 GM Passenger Cars and Light-Duty Trucks (Including Saturn)

2003-2007 HUMMER H2

2006-2007 HUMMER H3

2005-2007 Saab 9-7X

with Side-Mounted Battery Terminals

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to update the models and provide a new labor operation number for this repair. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Numbers 02-06-04-015 and 03-06-03-006A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Condition

Some customers may comment on an intermittent no crank, no start condition.

Cause

This condition may be due to poor battery cable connections. Cross-threaded/stripped battery cable bolts inside the battery side post terminals may cause poor battery cable connections.

Correction

To avoid replacing the battery , do the following steps:

^ Clean the threads in the battery side post terminals using a 3/8" (# 16) NC bottom tap.

^ Replace the battery cable bolt.

The battery cable bolt is serviced separately from the cable and is available from your Parts Department. Be sure to use the correct bolt.

  • If the battery is new and this is not the problem it's likely a fuel pump issue. Try turning the ignition on for a few seconds before starting it, this would allow the pump to re-prime the fuel system.

Typically when a vehicle has a slow starter, it's an indication of a dieing battery. If you're battery is old or "abused" (maybe you listen to the radio a lot with the car off?), it can begin to lose it's voltage, especially under load. If you have a multi-meter, test the voltage of your battery when the car is completely off, when the car is starting, when the car is running and when the car is revved up to mid-low RPM. Reading these voltages can tell you A LOT about the state of your battery and your charging system. if your battery is below 12 V when the car is off the battery is dead. If the battery voltage drops super low during starting it can also indicate a dieing battery. Try it out and let us know the results!
