intermittent failure of keyboard & trackpad

The built-in keyboard and trackpad on my Yoga720 intermittently stop working. Rebooting makes no difference, and I tried installing latest drivers. Some minutes or hours after failure it spontaneously starts working again. I have opened up the computer and can’t see any obviously loose connectors or crushed cables. My guess is its a hardware fault and am contemplating buying a new keyboard & trackpad. Does anyone have other ideas?

Hi @wmkeogh

Can you make it happen by pressing down on the touchpad in various places or around the F6 key?

I had a similar problem in an older Lenovo laptop where the touchpad didn't work intermittently as the cursor would scroll to the top right corner of the screen and stay there regardless of what I tried.

I think that it must have been shorting out on the motherboard as after a while it must have flexed back into position and starting working again until the next time.

I ended up having to place a piece of insulating material between the touchpad and the motherboard to stop it from happening. I cut open an old anti static bag that I had and cut a piece to size so that it prevented the touchpad from touching the motherboard.

After doing this I had no more problems

Thanks @jayeff, I'll try that next time it goes wrong.

I figured out the problem. It seems to be the sensor that disables the trackpad & keyboard when the laptop is in tablet mode is malfunctioning and turning off the trackpad & keyboard when it shouldn’t. So far I can ‘fix’ it each time by just opening screen to 180degrees and then back to normal laptop position.
