Screen seems to freeze after SSD installation

Hello all,

I installed an SSD into the machine, and it went fantastic. The computer starts up, really quickly and runs excellently. Until… the system seems to freeze but the mouse is movable. Just can’t click on anything.

Occasionally, if I leave it on and walk away, the screen has a red “filter” on it.

If i restart the machine it starts back up and works great, until it freezes.

Any thoughts?

Sadly, this SSD is too fast for your system, its a Fixed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) your system requires a SSD which can run at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s).

Some SSD’s are Auto Sense similar to how Ethernet 10 & 100 mbps systems, hubs & switches work. Here the drive matches the systems SATA I/O speed.

You’ll need a SSD similar to this one Samsung 860 EVO

Note how the interface line lists all of the SATA interfaces: SATA 6 Gbps Interface, compatible with SATA 3 Gbps & 1.5 Gbps interfaces

The Crucial MX500 SSD only offers the one I/O speed as you can see here Crucial MX500 Technincal Details

So any SSD you put in that doesn’t list SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) it won’t work reliably. Sorry ;-{

Thank you for the reply. It makes very little sense to me that iFixit recommended that drive in this case.

@brett collins - Sadly, I had notified them of the issue a few years ago. With others who had the same issue ;-{

What makes the issue madding is it can appear to work and then you get into hangs and crashes. This gets into the max performance of the SSD (burst) some older slower drives will appear to be fine until you load them up then the housekeeping processes kick in knocking your system silly!
