Laptop won't turn on. (Only care about HDD)

So a couple month ago my around 7 year old Lenovo g560 decided to just die infront of me. The problem isn’t with the battery, I think.

When plugged in, nothing happens. When left to charge and then turned on, nothing happens. I’ve tried some YouTube repair guides, but again, nothing happens.

Primarily I’d just like to save the hard drive on it. If someone could tell me if the laptop not working has corrupted data or not I’d be thankful. If I had to say what died, I’d say the motherboard did.

You don’t give any details like what the LED’s, fan, etc. are doing. Have you reseated RAM, removed all removable components, removed battery and tried with just power supply/charger, etc., etc.

Here is how to remove the hard drive:

Then connect to another computer and copy files.

The led's are not turning on like they normally would on start-up, the fans do not start spinning like engines on start-up either like they normally would.

The Youtube guide I watched made me take out battery and use just power supply, again did not work.

All I'm worried about is the hard drive and if it's recoverable or not.

Thanks for your answer though, appreciate it.

Hi @mroad

Unless the hard drive is dead it will be relatively easy to recover the data.

I used to do data recovery professionally.

@aactech Well let's hope the data recovery goes well. Thanks for your answers I appreciate them.

Hi @mroad

If you have a DMM (digital multimeter) first check that the charger’s output is OK. It should measure +20V DC. (see image below)

If there is no output or if it is <+20V DC then this may be why the laptop shows no indication of any power and also the battery may have become depleted due to not being charged. Try using another compatible charger and check if it works OK. If it does allow the battery to fully charge before using the laptop on the battery only.

If the charger tests OK then here’s the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop. This will help you to open the laptop so that you can access and test that the DC-In jack and cable are OK (see image below).

Once you have accessed the cable, unplug it from the board and then use the Ohmmeter function of the DMM to ensure continuity of the red and black wires from the jack to the cable plug. If one of the wires is open circuit (most probably in the jack itself) then the cable/jack component module will have to be replaced as it cannot be easily repaired. The image below also shows the part number for it. If you search online using the part number only you will find suppliers of the part.

If the DC-In jack and cable tests OK then there is a motherboard problem. On p.39 of the manual you’ll find the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the HDD so that it can either be installed in a desktop PC as a secondary storage drive or connected to a laptop using a suitable enclosure so that your data can be retrieved from it. Search online for how to connect a HDD from a dead laptop into another computer (example only)

Thanks for your detailed answer as I appreciate it. Though I don't think I have a digital multimeter I think I'll check out the manual you mentioned and the tutorial on how to connect the hard drive to another computer.

I would say it’s the laptop and the drive is fine. What country are you in.
