Voice sounds muffled when putting phone on ear after opening

After having opened my phone (for replacing the lightning unit), my voice sounds muffled to others when holding the phone next to my ear. It sounds okay if I leave a few mm air gap. I have turned off the rear mike in the settings, which seems to improve the sound quality, but it seems that there are vibrations from my voice that confuse the rear mic when they are transmitted via the case. Any advise? One remark: After having reassembled my phone, I have not yet used the adhesive tape ring for glueing the display back to the case, since I am not sure whether I need to open the phone again for fixing this issue elsewhere inside.

While there might be a small difference in sound quality with the screen unsecured, it shouldn’t sound muffled. It “sounds” like there is either something wrong with the replacement Lightning Port flex or something went wrong during the installation. The microphone is the tiny gold can on the flex. It has a tiny hole to allow the sound waves to hit the sensor. If that is obstructed in any way, you will get muffled sound.

Double check your work and you can always try to install the original flex to see if the problem goes away or not.

Just checked with the voice recorder: My voice sounds absolutely fine if the phone does not touch my face/ear but if there is a gap of 1 or 2 mm. Only when I put the phone directly onto my ear with no 1mm-gap (like you would normally do for a phone call), the voice sounds distorted. The hint above (e.g. the tiny hole in the mic being covered etc.) would not explain this, and I have actually checked the mics before, they seem fine to me.
