How to fix an issue where the PC does not properly wake up from sleep?

I have been chasing this issue for someone for days and it wasn’t an easy fix, at least so far. What I have noticed is the computer randomly goes to a black screen, or it happens when it isn’t used for so long and it needs to be turned off from the power strip. So far I have tried the following:

  • Disconnected transferred drive (pulled from old system) - fixed nothing
  • Changed CMOS battery, reseated GPU and updated drivers for CPU/GPU - fixed nothing
  • Switched out to the keyboard it came with - fixed nothing
  • Reseated the RAM (original from HP) - testing; running extended Windows Memory test

In this case, could it be the motherboard? Usually I can knock this kind of failure out with a CMOS battery and reseating the PCIe components - in this case, the battery is designed as such that you need to remove the side drive caddy (4 T15), DVD drive faceplate, disconnect the top SATA cable, remove the GPU and then you get access to the battery, but it’s still happening. And the RAM is just as bad to gain access to.

To make it worse, this was purchased from a reseller who customizes them before sale unknown to me or the owner at the time, so the HP warranty is only 30 days and it’s 10 months old :-(. If this motherboard is bad, we’re in deep trouble.

Hi @nick ,

Have you checked what the BIOS version is?

Can’t find anything for a 690-0024 but have found these for a

HP Pavilion Gaming 690-0000i - Win 10 1903

HP Pavilion Gaming 690-0000a - Win 10 1903

Also I know that you changed the HDD but in BIOS setup there are options under Power > OS Power Management that may be worth checking to see if they have any effect.

Try running a standalone memory test. This is not to test the memory but to see if the problem is motherboard or OS related. This program doesn't need Windows to be able to operate.

Does it do it when in safe mode as well?

Just some thoughts.

@jayeff I updated the BIOS first thing hoping for an easy fix. Did not check safe mode yet.

The way the Windows test works is it reboots and runs on it's own, so it's similar to a standalone test but not quite the same.

@nick ... i think @jayeff was referring to the bios self diagnostics test. usually a bios will have a memory test and/or hdd test built in. if not, you could download a test that will boot from usb .... something like hirens will allow you to boot from usb and run a multitude of tests at the hardframe level, no operating system needed.

@jostewcrew ah okay. Yeah the UEFI HPs integrate a memory test into the BIOS.

Will try that later.

@nick ... also, if you dont have for your lab:

https://www.amazon.com/Desktop-Computer-...

very handy for troubleshooting if lazy like me and dont want to test boards without honing in first. worth every penny. just an example, find one that meets your needs.
