Water inside screen, but phone not dead

Hello. Two days ago my phone fell 2m deep into the pool, after 5 min we managed to take it out (its winter). I turned the phone off instantly and put it in rice for 48h but as most know that doesn’t achieve much.

Two days later since the incident, I connected the phone to a power cable and it turns on, appears to be functional as well. However, there’s notable water in the display and a few water drops inside the camera lenses.

So I have a few questions…

1) Should I keep the phone 100% off until there is no noticeable water, or could it be safe to use after a certain period even if there’s moisture in the screen/camera lenses?

2) Is it worth to try a DIY fix, considering the phone still looks alive? Does the fix require components to be replaced or simply drying? In case I take it to (unofficial) repair shop I’d like to know what to expect.

Thanks!

First thing rice does nothing except get stuck in the charging port. Never charge it. You need to immediately disconnect the battery and take the board out and dry it and clean any corrosion preferably in a sonic cleaner and hope it works. Once it's wet it can have hidden corrosion that can cause the phone to stop working at anytime. Or it may never have a problem.

Hi

Sorry to hear that your iPhone isn’t in the best way!

What I would to here is turn it off as soon as you see this and take it to a repair shop and ask them to unplug the battery

The next part you can do

I would order some isopropyl alcohol and some screw drivers from ifixit (any of the kits with bits will do a grand job)along side a new screen

And dowse the board in the alcohol with the board out and with a soft toothbrush gently brush off any corrosion (it usually looks black white or blue)

oh and finally take it out the rice it doesn’t work ever ,if anything it just makes it worse due to all that starch from the rice witch does no one any thing good;-)

Hopefully this helps

If you need any help with anything just ask

Thanks:-)

I have seen this issue with water between the layers of the LCD many times. If the water was fresh and clear, the cloudy, semi-transparent effect may dissipate over time. If the water was dirty or had chemicals (swimming pool, saltwater or another type liquid other than water…) then it will never look 100% right no matter how long it sits and dries.

Ideally would be to have a technician remove the screen and inspect the extent of the water damage to all internal components. It may or may not have any other issues, but a lot depends on the severity of water infiltration and chemicals in the liquid. I have had times at my shop where I opened the device that had fallen in clean water and I let the phone sit a couple of days disassembled, with a fan blowing on it and when reassembled, those “clouds” and discoloration have totally disappeared.
