Is It Still Worth Upgrading

Hi everyone,

I have Late 2009 21.5” iMac, through some miracle it’s still working from the day I purchased it.

Now unfortunately it’s starting to get a little bogged down and I can’t upgrade the software anymore. I downloaded Malwarebytes but that only does so much.

My question is this, is it worth upgrading the RAM and drive so I can do new software updates so all my apps can work like excel? Or, do I just buy a new iMac 27” and call it a day?

My usage for my computer is primarily at work for my restaurant. I run work apps. Security video. Surf the net. And thats about it.

Any insight is appreciated. Thank you.

Sadly there is only so much you can do to breathe new life into this system. Upgrading the RAM to 16 GB would be a good start, the second would be to upgrade the drive to a SSD but you are limited to a SSD which supports the slower SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) as your system can’t run SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drives.

While these will add some zip, you are limited to macOS High Sierra (10.13.x) as the highest supported macOS so the applications you are using need to run it it as the highest. Frankly I would stick with Sierra as I find its more stable on SATA based systems which have SSD’s. This gets into the older (HFS+) Vs newer (APFS) files systems.

Buying a new system today is tricky! Apple is expected to rollout some of their new systems this fall which run on their silicon processors Vs the current Intel processors. We don’t know what they will announce yet so it maybe just laptops or it could be a mix of both.

The smartest move is just ride it out until the dust settles, that’s would I would do. If you need something now get a used system which meets your needs.
